Since early December, Spain has been hit by a series of tragic events: in just ten days, five women were killed in different regions across the country. All of these crimes are being investigated as cases of domestic violence, once again highlighting the scale and impact of gender-based aggression in society.
The victims were found in the cities of Torrijos (Toledo), Alicante, Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), as well as in two towns in the province of Málaga — Campillos and Rincón de la Victoria. This year, the number of women killed by partners or ex-partners has reached 43, leaving 26 children without their mothers.
Tragedies across different regions
In Torrijos, a 39-year-old woman named Rosemeri was stabbed to death by her former partner, who has since been taken into custody by police. It is known that in October, she sought help at a local women’s center, but did not file an official complaint or receive protection. She is survived by three underage children, who are now cared for by social services.
In Alicante, the tragedy took place in an apartment where 29-year-old Oriana died from stab wounds. Her partner, from whom she was in the process of divorcing, committed suicide at the crime scene. The couple had a young daughter.
Cases in Madrid and Málaga
In Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), 45-year-old María Ángeles was killed by her husband, who jumped off the roof of their building afterward. The family was registered in the VioGén system, but the threat level had been assessed as minimal. The couple had two daughters.
Two murders occurred in Malaga province within a short period. In Campillos, a 28-year-old man confessed to strangling his 25-year-old partner. In Rincon de la Victoria, a man was arrested on suspicion of killing his 60-year-old ex-wife. In both cases, there had been no prior reports of violence.
Public reaction and statistics
Equality Minister Ana Redondo called on society and state institutions to take a more active stand against domestic violence. According to a recent study, one in three women in Spain over the age of 16 has experienced gender-based violence, and 2.7 million women have suffered physical or sexual assaults by partners.
Authorities remind the public about the 016 hotline and other emergency services for victims of violence. The case files include photos of the homes where the tragedies occurred, along with information about support for the affected families.
In case you didn’t know, Ana Redondo has served as Spain’s Minister of Equality since 2023. She is actively promoting initiatives to protect women and children from domestic violence and supports legislative reforms aimed at toughening punishments for such crimes. The ministry regularly publishes reports on the gender violence situation and coordinates support services for victims.
