New rules for intercity bus passengers took effect in Madrid, affecting everyone who uses this mode of transport. The regulations now clearly specify which items are allowed on board and which are not. The decision aims to enhance safety and travel comfort, as well as eliminate disputes between passengers and drivers.
Previously, many faced uncertainties: was it permitted to bring a shopping cart, would a child’s scooter or a musical instrument be allowed? Now, these issues are resolved by an official regulation. According to Elconfidencial, the updated requirements apply to all buses operated by Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM).
What is allowed on board
Under the new rules, each passenger may carry only one item, provided it does not disturb others or pose a safety risk. The document specifies the allowed dimensions: bags, backpacks, and briefcases can be up to 50 x 30 x 10 cm; small suitcases are limited to 55 x 40 x 20 cm. Shopping trolleys, wheeled backpacks, children’s scooters, balance bikes, and pedal-less bicycles are also permitted. Musical instruments and sports equipment are allowed only in cases.
In exceptional cases, the driver may permit other items, provided they pose no threat and do not block the aisle. This rule is intended to make journeys more predictable and safe for everyone on board.
Restrictions and prohibitions
If the bus is fully booked or the luggage space is occupied, the driver has the right to refuse boarding with additional items. Boarding may also be denied if the item causes inconvenience or danger to others. Even with a valid ticket, a passenger may be asked to leave the bus if their baggage does not meet the new requirements.
All items must be placed in the luggage compartment or designated areas. Backpacks and briefcases are not allowed to be worn on the back — they must be held in hand. Only one large musical instrument per entire bus is allowed in the cabin, and all items must be securely fastened to prevent damage or injury.
Passenger responsibility
Everyone is responsible for their own belongings and any potential damage they may cause to others. The new rules emphasize the importance of respect for those around you and maintaining order in public transport. This is especially relevant for suburban residents who use intercity routes daily.
The introduction of clear regulations is expected to reduce conflicts and speed up boarding. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, similar changes in transport rules have already led to a noticeable decrease in complaints and disputes in other regions of the country.
Context and similar cases
In recent years, transport companies across Spain have tightened their requirements for carrying luggage and personal belongings. For example, Barcelona has recently introduced special buses for large events, which are also subject to strict regulations regarding permitted items — more details can be found in the article about the launch of new bus routes for concerts. Such measures are linked to increased passenger numbers and the need to ensure safety and comfort for everyone.
In other Spanish cities, stricter rules are often accompanied by informational campaigns and explanations for residents. In Madrid, authorities also plan to conduct additional inspections and inform passengers about new requirements. These changes are part of a broader trend toward the standardization of public transportation across the country.
