A scandal has erupted in the small town of Maçanet de la Selva (Girona) over the death of an American Bully dog. A local resident who was temporarily entrusted with the animal has been detained on suspicion of committing a particularly serious crime against animals. The tragedy occurred at the end of September, when a passerby discovered a transport container with the dog’s body in the Sils pond. The woman immediately contacted the police and later shared her discovery on social media, sparking a strong reaction among local residents.
Police quickly joined the investigation. Officers determined that the dog, named Trini, had been handed over to the suspect in June. The dog’s owner, who lives in another city, agreed to let a friend from Maçanet de la Selva take care of the pet temporarily. However, after several months, the dog died under mysterious circumstances.
A forensic examination revealed that the cause of death was multiple injuries to the head and chest, indicating foul play. After the dog’s death, the animal was placed in a sealed container, wrapped with a fabric strap, and an attempt was made to sink it in a local reservoir. However, the container did not sink completely, and the body was discovered by a random passerby.
Investigation and consequences
During the investigation, police identified the suspect. He was summoned to the Santa Coloma de Farners station, where he tried to convince officers that the dog had simply run away. However, the collected evidence and expert analysis completely disproved his version of events. The man was charged with a serious animal cruelty offense, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison.
It was also revealed that the detainee did not have the required permits to own potentially dangerous dog breeds. He had also failed to register his current pets in the municipal registry, take out insurance, or mark the premises where the animals were kept, as required by law.
Public reaction and next steps
The story sparked widespread public outcry. On social media, local residents actively discussed the incident, demanding justice for the offender. Animal protection organizations called on citizens to report any cases of pet abuse. The suspect, who has a permanent address, was released until trial but is required to appear in court upon request.
This case has once again raised the issue of stricter oversight over pet ownership and owner accountability. Regional authorities promised to step up inspections and emphasized the importance of registering animals and following all regulations for their care.
