Mass Protest in Valencia Demands Resignation of Carlos Mazón One Year After Tragedy

Thousands Take to the Streets Again: Why Protests Persist on the Anniversary of the Disaster

Thousands gathered once again in Valencia to demand the resignation of regional head Carlos Mazón. The protest took place on the anniversary of the tragedy that claimed hundreds of lives. Hundreds of organizations and residents of all ages supported the demonstration.

Thousands gathered again in the center of Valencia to voice their dissatisfaction with the leadership of the region’s president, Carlos Mazón. It has been exactly one year since the disaster that claimed 229 lives, and local residents are determined not to forget what happened. This rally marks the twelfth in as many months, underscoring that public tension remains high.

The protest was organized by more than two hundred groups, including trade unions, civic and social movements, as well as associations representing victims. Residents from not only Valencia but also other cities and villages affected by last year’s disaster joined the march. This time, there were noticeably fewer flags on the streets than usual, but the atmosphere remained tense and emotional.

The procession of protesters set off from Plaza de San Agustín in the early evening. Leading the way were farmers’ tractors, which had helped deal with the aftermath of the catastrophe, followed by musicians playing traditional Valencian tunes. A special place in the march was given to people with disabilities and relatives of the victims, who carried banners demanding the resignation of the regional president.

The political and legal backdrop is fueling protest sentiment

The situation surrounding the leadership of the autonomous community remains extremely tense. Carlos Mazón makes no secret of his intention to remain in office until the end of his term and is even considering running again. Meanwhile, the investigation into the tragedy continues: Judge Nuria Ruiz Tobarra is questioning the official version of the authorities regarding the delay in the disaster response. Attention on Mazón has intensified after the court ordered the journalist Maribel Vilaplana, who was with him on the day of the tragedy, to testify as a witness.

Tensions are also rising within the regional government. After Mazón promised to make personnel changes in November, signs of discord have appeared among his supporters. If the regional head decides to surround himself only with loyal figures, it could spark new internal conflicts and weaken the government’s position.

Anniversary of the tragedy: remembrance and calls for change

The rally took place as preparations for the official state memorial were underway, set to be held in a few days. For many participants, the day was not only a chance to honor the victims, but also an opportunity to remind the authorities of the need for change. People of all ages and professions united for a single goal — to achieve justice and accountability for what happened.

Although the number of participants has gradually declined since the first mass demonstration, the protests continue to draw thousands of concerned citizens. Valencian society is making it clear: questions remain for the regional authorities, and trust in the government needs to be restored.
