PP and Vox Strengthen Their Positions Following the Arrests of Ábalos and Koldo García

Vox gains momentum as left-wing parties' ratings decline

Vox and the PP are consolidating their lead amid the scandal surrounding the recent arrests. The left is losing support as the opposition gains ground. Discover how Spain’s political landscape is shifting.

Spain’s political landscape is once again shifting: following the recent arrests of a former minister and his adviser, opposition parties have noticeably gained ground. Vox is showing steady growth, raising its share of support to 17.4%. That’s five points higher than the party received in the last election in summer 2023. Meanwhile, the Partido Popular (PP) has also strengthened its position, climbing half a percentage point compared to the previous poll and reaching 31%.

On the other hand, left-wing parties are losing voter trust. The Socialist Party (PSOE) has dropped another half a point, losing nearly four points since the last election. The Sumar coalition has fallen by one percentage point in a month, while Podemos, in contrast, has made a slight gain—up seven-tenths of a point.

Attention is also drawn to the rise in support for the political group linked to Alvise Pérez, despite suspicions of illegal funding. His party is now polling at 2.3%, which is also higher than previous figures.

Rating Dynamics

The recent events surrounding the arrests of high-ranking officials have had a significant impact on public opinion. Voters are increasingly favoring right-wing parties, as reflected in poll results. Vox, which previously lacked enough influence to form a coalition with PP, has now significantly bolstered its position. The Partido Popular, despite a slight decline compared to the last election, remains the leading political force.

Left-wing parties, on the other hand, are facing a loss of supporters. The decline in ratings for PSOE and Sumar indicates that voters are seeking alternatives among the opposition. Even the slight increase in support for Podemos does not offset the overall trend of declining popularity for the left bloc.

Impact of scandals

The arrests of former officials have acted as a catalyst for changes in political sentiment. Scandals over financing and abuse of power have undermined trust in the ruling parties. This has given the opposition additional momentum, which it is using to strengthen its position.

At the same time, new political movements such as Alvise Pérez’s party are also attracting extra attention. Despite allegations of violations, their support is growing, reflecting a public demand for new faces in politics.

Election outlook

If elections were held today, the PP and Vox bloc would have a significant advantage over the left-wing parties. The gap between the opposition and the ruling forces has widened by nearly seven points. This could result in major changes in the balance of power in parliament and possibly lead to the formation of a new government.

For now, the political struggle continues, with each side trying to mobilize its supporters. The situation may still change in the coming months, especially if new scandals or unexpected alliances emerge.

In case you didn’t know, Vox is a Spanish right-wing party founded in 2013 that has significantly increased its popularity in recent years. The party’s leader, Santiago Abascal, is known for his hardline stance on issues of immigration and national identity. The Partido Popular (PP) is one of Spain’s oldest and largest political forces, traditionally advocating for conservative values and economic reforms. PSOE, Sumar, and Podemos occupy the left side of Spain’s political spectrum, but have recently faced declining voter trust amid corruption scandals and internal divisions.
