Romería, Sirat, and Sorda Lead Gaudí Awards Nominations

Catalan cinema reaches record number of nominations – suspense builds

Romería, Sirat, and Sorda have emerged as the top contenders for the 2025 Gaudí Awards. This year’s shortlist features 29 films, including many new voices. Find out who else will compete for the top honors.

The eighteenth Gaudí Awards ceremony will take place in Barcelona in February 2025, and the competition for the statues is already expected to be intense. This year, three films—Romería, Sirat, and Sorda—have attracted the most attention, earning the highest number of nominations. Romería, directed by Carla Simón, leads with 13 nominations; Sirat by Oliver Laxe follows with 12; and Sorda, Eva Libertad’s project, has 10. This achievement marks a record for Catalan cinema in recent years.

Among the other notable contenders is the documentary Tardes de soledad by Albert Serra, focusing on matador Andrés Roca Rey and the world of bullfighting. The film received six nominations, setting an all-time record for documentaries in the history of the Gaudí Awards. Also among the favorites are the historical thriller Frontera by Judith Colell and the debut work of Jaume Claret Muxart—Estrany riu—each competing for eight awards.

Nomination Leaders

Romería, recognized for Best Adapted Screenplay, has been included in key categories such as Best Film, Direction, and Screenplay. Additionally, the film has received nominations for Cinematography, Debut Acting, Production, Original Music, Editing, Art Direction, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Visual Effects, and Sound. Sirat, which won the Jury Prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was shortlisted for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category, is also featured in the main categories, including Direction, Cinematography, Editing, Art Direction, Costume Design, Makeup, Visual Effects, Sound, Production, and Music.

Sorda, based on the short film of the same name, explores the challenges of motherhood in the context of deafness. The film is up for ten awards, including Direction, Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress, Supporting Roles, Production, Sound, Art Direction, and Costume Design.

New Names and Debuts

This year’s Gaudí Awards shortlist features 29 films: 25 Catalan and four European. Among the newcomers, La furia by director Gemma Blasco stands out with six nominations, Esmorza amb mi by Iván Morales and Molt lluny by Gerard Oms, each with five. Mi amiga Eva by Cesc Gay received nominations in two categories, while Los Tortuga by Belén Funes was recognized in three.

Estrany riu, the debut film by Jaume Claret Muxart, has been nominated in the categories of Best Debut, Cinematography, Best Supporting Actress, Breakthrough of the Year, Producing, and Original Score. Judith Colell’s Frontera is also up for eight awards, further cementing the place of historical thrillers in Catalan cinema.

Competition in the main categories

For the first time in the history of the awards, five films are up for Best Picture: Esmorza amb mi, Estrany riu, Molt lluny, Frontera, and the dramedy Wolfgang by director Javier Ruiz Caldera. Wolfgang also received a nomination for Best Original Score, composed by Clara Peya.

Among the actors, special attention is on Sergi López, who has been nominated for the Gaudí Awards eight times but has yet to win. This year, he is once again in the running for his role in Sirat.

A diversity of genres

The list of nominees spans a wide range of genres—from historical thrillers and dramas to documentaries and comedies. This broad selection reflects the dynamism and evolution of the Catalan film industry, as well as the growing interest in new talent and experimental projects.

The second round of voting will continue until January 26, after which the winners will be announced. This year, the Gaudí Awards promise to be among the most exciting in their history, and the sheer number of nominations and diversity of contenders only increases anticipation among both the public and industry professionals.
