In Spain, the period for applying for benefits for citizens over 52 under the previous conditions is coming to an end. The State Employment Service has warned that those born in 1973 or earlier have very little time left to take advantage of the old rules. New regulations will come into effect this year, affecting both applicant requirements and the application process itself.
This support is intended for those who have been unable to find work for a long time but continue making contributions to the social security system. It allows individuals to maintain their pension rights and provides a minimum income. The current monthly payment amounts to 80% of the IPREM indicator, and funds are deposited into the account between the 10th and 15th of the month following the reporting period. The benefit can be received until reaching retirement age, which is currently 66 in Spain. Applications must be submitted no later than 15 days after the end of the main unemployment benefit period.
You can apply for the benefit either through the employment service’s online portal or in person at a local office. To do so, you need to provide your bank details, an income statement, and proof of identity. It’s important that the applicant’s income does not exceed 75% of the minimum wage and that they are officially registered as unemployed.
The allowance is available not only to Spanish citizens. Foreigners, former inmates who are not eligible for other benefits, as well as individuals deemed fit for work after partial disability, can also apply. In addition, those who have worked between 93 and 359 days but are not eligible for the regular unemployment benefit may also qualify for support.
Among the key changes introduced by the reform is the mandatory submission of a tax declaration, even for low incomes. This measure aims to increase transparency and control over the distribution of benefits. Another significant change is the possibility to combine receiving the allowance with employment, which should make it easier to re-enter the job market and provide a more flexible adaptation process.
Authorities expect the new rules to make it easier to access benefits, reduce bureaucracy, and allow for a quicker response to individual situations. However, those wishing to apply under the old conditions should act quickly, as there is little time left to submit an application. For further information, it is recommended to contact employment service offices or use online services for consultation.
