In the coming day, northern regions of Spain will face a powerful storm, already named Borrasca Benjamin. This is the first truly dangerous cyclone of the season, and residents of several autonomous communities will feel its impact. Moving in from the west, its effects will be noticeable in Galicia by Wednesday evening, bringing heavy rain and strengthening winds.
On the coast of Cantabria and the Basque Country (País Vasco), a red alert has been issued due to the threat of giant waves that may reach up to 8 meters. Local authorities strongly advise people to stay away from the sea and exercise maximum caution. Winds in the north and east of the Iberian Peninsula will strengthen up to 100 km/h, and in some areas, transport disruptions and infrastructure damage are possible.
In Galicia, rainfall may exceed 60 mm within 12 hours, and the coast is expected to see storm surges up to 6 meters high. West and southwest winds will be especially strong in coastal zones, with gusts reaching 90 km/h. On Thursday, weather conditions are expected to worsen: heavy rains will affect the Cantabrian coast, Castilla y León, northern Extremadura, Madrid, and Castilla-La Mancha. In the mountains and northern parts of the country, local flooding and power line outages are possible.
The difficult situation will persist over the weekend. A new front is expected to bring even heavier rainfall and colder temperatures. In Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands (Baleares), stormy winds and waves up to 3 meters are also forecast. Residents and visitors of coastal cities are advised to monitor warnings closely and not to risk their safety.
