Volkswagen ID. Polo 2026: Electric shock for the segment — return of the name and a new bet on affordability

The new Volkswagen ID. Polo hits the Spanish market: price, batteries, trims, and unexpected details

Volkswagen brings back the iconic Polo name in an electric format. The new ID. Polo 2026 offers up to 211 hp, batteries of 37 and 52 kWh, and fast charging. The model is already announced for Spain with prices starting from €24,330 under promotions.

Volkswagen has officially unveiled the ID. Polo 2026—the brand’s first electric model to revive the legendary Polo name for the Spanish market, now in a new format. This move not only marks a change in direction for the brand under the leadership of Thomas Schäfer, but also opens a new chapter for the mass-market electric vehicle segment in Spain. As competition among compact electric cars intensifies, betting on a recognizable name and an affordable price could be key to success in the Spanish market.

Design and philosophy: a return to origins

The appearance of the ID. Polo 2026 is the work of Andreas Mindt and his team, who have incorporated the signature ‘Pure Positive’ style. The front features an LED strip between the headlights, while the massive rear C-pillar is a nod to the first Golf. The rear lights are connected, and the Volkswagen logo is now illuminated, highlighting both continuity and modernity. The interior departs from recent minimalism: the digital instrument cluster is done in a retro style reminiscent of the Golf MK1, and physical buttons have returned to the central console and steering wheel, bringing back tactile ergonomics valued by many drivers. Material quality and craftsmanship have significantly improved, which is especially important for buyers in Spain, where expectations for finish and practicality are traditionally high.

Technology and space: new standards for the segment

Built on the MEB+ platform, the 2026 ID. Polo is shorter, wider, and taller than its gasoline predecessor: 4,053 mm long, 1,816 mm wide, and 1,530 mm high. The increased wheelbase (2,600 mm versus 2,552 mm in the classic Polo) provides noticeably more space for rear passengers—a rarity in the compact segment. The trunk volume is 441 liters, surpassing even the previous generation Passat GTE. This makes the new model especially attractive for urban families and young buyers who value versatility without compromising on size.

Engines, batteries, and charging: options for everyone

The 2026 ID. Polo lineup includes versions with 116, 135, and 211 hp, and a sporty 226-hp ID. Polo GTI is expected in 2027. The base models come with an LFP battery of 37 kWh (up to 329 km of range, fast charging up to 90 kW), while the more powerful versions get an NMC battery of 52 kWh (up to 455 km, charging up to 105 kW). Importantly, even the entry-level trim supports fast charging, and top versions can tow up to 1,200 kg—a rare feature for electric cars in this class. In addition, the ID. Polo is one of the first in the Volkswagen lineup to receive the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function—enabling external devices to be powered with up to 3.6 kW, which can be useful for trips and outdoor activities.

Trims and pricing: a focus on the mass market

Volkswagen brings back the traditional Polo trim names: Trend, Life, and Style. Even the base version comes equipped with LED headlights, a 10-inch digital instrument panel, a 13-inch Innovision multimedia screen, climate control, Side Assist and Lane Assist systems. Options typical of higher segments are available for an extra charge: a 425 W Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic roof, massage seats with electric adjustment, and the Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition. At launch, prices for Spain have been announced: ID. Polo Life (56 kWh, 211 hp) — €35,070, Style — €38,920, Style 1st Edition — €39,210. However, with branded promotions, financing, and VWFS programs, the minimum price can drop to €24,330, making the model one of the most affordable in its class on the Spanish market.

Market context and competitors

The arrival of the ID. Polo 2026 on the Spanish market coincides with a growing interest in compact electric vehicles and increased competition in the segment. It’s worth noting that Volkswagen is not the only brand betting on the comeback of iconic names in electric form: Renault recently took a similar approach with the new Twingo, where the key features lie in details of the interior and battery — more about this is covered in the article about Renault’s unexpected strategic shift. For Spanish buyers, the choice between such models is becoming increasingly complex, while competition is growing both technologically and in terms of price.

The Volkswagen ID. Polo 2026 is not just a new model; it is an attempt to restore trust in the brand through recognizable design, practicality, and honest equipment. For the Spanish market, it could become one of the most notable launches of the year, especially amid growing demand for affordable electric vehicles and tightening environmental standards in cities.
