Youth Council Blames Congress for Failing to Protect Tenants

Spain's MPs refuse to extend tenant protections: youth outraged

The Youth Council has sharply condemned Congress’s decision not to extend tenant protections. The organization warns of rising social tensions and a loss of trust in institutions.

A new conflict has flared up in Spain over housing policy: the Youth Council has published an open letter to members of Congress after parliament rejected an extension of measures to protect tenants. Youth organizations accused parliamentarians of inaction and stressed that the refusal to prolong rental protection worsens the housing access crisis, especially for young people.

In the letter, the Youth Council points out that the country faces a paradoxical situation: major investment funds can buy up residential buildings, while ordinary people face insurmountable barriers when trying to rent or buy a home. Youth representatives believe such parliamentary decisions undermine trust in democratic institutions and fuel a sense of injustice in society.

Social tension

The organization, which unites more than 60 youth groups, warns that abandoning support for tenants could further increase social tension. In their view, the housing problem has already gone beyond the private sphere and has become a factor affecting societal stability. When a significant portion of the population cannot exercise basic rights, not only personal well-being suffers, but also faith in the fairness of state decisions.

The Youth Council emphasizes that the housing crisis is not an isolated problem. It affects employment, mental health, the ability to make long-term plans, and even the accumulation of personal capital. The younger generation, despite having education and jobs, is increasingly facing chronic instability and cannot count on independence.

Criticism of the market model

The letter also criticizes the existing housing market model, which, according to youth activists, has in recent years become increasingly investment-oriented rather than serving its social function. The Council believes that this approach only deepens inequality and moves the realization of the constitutional right to housing further out of reach.

The Youth Council demands that parliamentarians take conscious responsibility and reminds them: decisions like yesterday’s vote directly affect access to basic rights and the future of young people. The organization notes that Congress had a chance to put housing at the center of the agenda, but failed to use this opportunity.

Context and reaction

The issue of extending tenant protections has once again sparked debate in the Spanish parliament. Previously, as noted in the article on Sumar’s position, attempts to extend the rent freeze also failed to gain majority support among deputies, which only intensified the public debate over tenant rights and the state’s role in regulating the housing market. For more on previous initiatives and political reactions, see the publication about Sumar’s campaign to extend tenant support measures.
