The Consum supermarket chain closed the year 2025 with significant growth: the company’s revenue reached €5.163 billion, a 9.7% increase over the previous year. Net profit rose by 12% to €122 million. The cooperative’s management announced record payments to employees — €128.7 million was distributed among 23,031 workers, of whom nearly 94% are co-op members. This amount included both bonuses for meeting targets and returns and interest for cooperative members.
Over the year, the company’s staff grew by 1,162 people. Consum maintained its position as the sixth largest retail chain in Spain by sales area and increased its national market share to 4.9%. In its operating regions, this share reached 13.9%. In 2025, the chain opened 59 new stores, including 18 of its own supermarkets and 41 Charter franchise outlets. With this, the company now operates 1,017 stores, most of which are located in the Valencian Community, as well as in Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, Andalusia, and Aragon.
Plans for new regions
CEO Antonio Rodríguez noted that despite economic instability and the impact of epidemics on prices, the company not only held its ground but strengthened its position through a growing customer base and expense optimization. In the coming years, Consum plans to enter the Madrid market: the first supermarket, covering 1,400 sq. m., will open in Parla in 2028. To support this expansion, a logistics platform is being built in Noblejas (Toledo), which should reduce transportation costs in Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid.
In Catalonia, where 289 stores are already operating, seven more locations and up to 20 new Charter franchises will open in 2026. Management emphasizes that this region remains one of the key areas for further growth.
The impact of new measures and ecology
After the tragic consequences of DANA in Valencia in 2024, Consum introduced the practice of closing stores during weather alerts. According to Antonio Rodríguez, this measure has virtually no effect on total sales: losses from one day are quickly offset by subsequent days. The company intends to continue this policy to ensure the safety of employees and customers.
The report also notes that Consum’s carbon footprint increased by 16% last year. The main reasons were the use of generators and the integration of new stores acquired from other operators. Environmental and sustainability issues are becoming increasingly relevant for major chains, as also confirmed by the recent decisions of the Catalan authorities to update the bus fleet and reduce emissions — more details on the new environmental transport requirements.
