In Granada, the Princesa de Girona Award for Art for 2026 was presented on the stage of the Manuel de Falla Auditorium. The winner was director and screenwriter Gemma Blasco, author of the film La Fúria. The announcement of the laureate took place with the participation of Queen Letizia and gathered more than 800 guests, most of them young people. The other finalists for the prize were tenor Xavier Anduaga, photographer and documentarian César Dezfuli, and pianist Juan Floristán.
This year has been a breakthrough for Gemma Blasco: after her debut in feature film, she already won the Gaudí Award for Best New Director and was also nominated for the Goya in the same category. Now, the prestigious national Princesa de Girona Award has been added to these achievements. As the director herself notes, the plot of La Fúria is based on her personal experience—having survived sexual aggression at the age of 18. Receiving the award from the Catalan Film Academy, Blasco addressed her younger self, emphasizing that even in the most difficult moments, it is possible to meet people who do not see the female body as a trophy.
The leading role in La Fúria was played by Ángela Cervantes, who has already received Gaudí awards and recognition at the Malaga festival. Her character faces the trauma of rape at a New Year’s Eve party, not knowing who the attacker was and finding no support from her brother. At the same time, she rehearses the role of Medea, which becomes a way for her to cope with the pain. At the Gaudí ceremony, the director dedicated her victory to all victims of sexual violence and thanked her friends for their support.
The Princesa de Girona Award in the field of arts annually honors young figures whose projects have a significant impact on Spain’s cultural life. This year, the ceremony became part of the Tour del Talento, organized by the Fundación Princesa de Girona. Interest in themes of personal history and overcoming trauma is growing in Spanish cinema: previously, other cases were discussed in the country when personal confessions became part of public events — for example, as happened with a participant of a cooking show who announced her pregnancy right during filming (more about the unexpected confession on MasterChef 14).
