Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has recorded a significant surge in sales in the Spanish market. Since March 2023, when the brand launched its operations in the country, the number of registered vehicles has exceeded 20,000 units. Sales growth has been especially dynamic in recent months.
In March 2024, the company reached the milestone of 1,000 cars sold. By the end of that same year, the number of electric vehicles and hybrids sold had risen to 5,000. By April 2025, BYD surpassed 10,000 registrations, and by August this year, sales volume doubled to 20,000 vehicles.
This outcome indicates a growing interest among Spanish consumers in electric vehicles and confidence in BYD’s technology. The brand’s most popular model is the SEAL U, offered both as a fully electric version and as a Dual Mode hybrid. In Spain, 8,677 of these vehicles have already been registered, with 6,743 units sold in 2025 alone, making SEAL U the year’s best-selling plug-in car.
BYD’s growth rate in the Spanish market is impressive: while the first 10,000 registrations took 25 months, the next 10,000 required just four months. This has allowed the company to become one of the leading electric vehicle manufacturers in the country.
In August, BYD once again became the leader in sales of electrified vehicles, selling 1,827 units and capturing 12.2% of the market. Since the beginning of the year, the company has sold 14,181 vehicles, accounting for 10.4% of the plug-in segment, which is 676% more than in the same period last year.
BYD ranks second in sales of fully electric vehicles, with 7,983 units sold and an 18.2% market share. The Dolphin Surf model, which entered the market just four months ago, has already taken third place in August sales with 451 registrations and tenth place for the year with 1,447 units sold. The BYD Atto 3 also made it into the top 10, finishing eighth with 1,553 registrations—double last year’s result.
