Used Car Sales Decline in Spain in August

Used Car Market in Spain: How Sales Changed in Summer 2025

August saw a decrease in used car transactions in Spain. Over the year, the market shows growth. The article examines trends by vehicle age and fuel type.

In August 2025, a slight decrease in the number of transactions involving used passenger cars and SUVs was recorded on the Spanish market. A total of 144,228 vehicles were sold during the month, down 0.7% compared to July. This result is attributed to the traditional slowdown in activity during the summer holiday period.

Despite the decline in August, sales of used cars increased by 4.7% over the first eight months of the year. From January to August, 1,411,616 vehicles changed owners in the country. Nearly two used cars are sold for every new car, highlighting the sustained interest in this segment.

An analysis by vehicle age shows that the most significant increase in August was among nearly new cars — those up to one year old. Their sales rose by 17.6%, reaching 7,936 units. Demand also grew for cars between eight and ten years old, up by 9.8% (16,226 vehicles). Cars aged one to three years were also popular, with sales up by 4.4% to 10,656 units.

Deals involving vehicles previously used as rentals drew particular attention in August. This segment saw an increase of 5.8%. Imports of used cars also rose — by nearly 17.3%, reaching 9,540 vehicles; however, their share of the market remains modest at 6.6% of total volume.

Vehicles less than five years old play a key role in fleet renewal. Over eight months, their sales increased by 7%, reaching 360,838 units, which accounts for 25.6% of all transactions. Experts believe that further stimulating demand for such cars will help accelerate the renewal of the country’s vehicle fleet.

At the same time, the majority of transactions still involve cars older than 15 years, which are most often sold between private individuals. Despite a 2.9% drop in sales in August, this segment grew by 4.2% year on year. From January to August, 582,409 of these vehicles were sold, representing over 41% of all deals.

As for fuel types, diesel vehicles maintained their lead with a 51% market share, although their sales fell by 0.6% to 718,576 units. In contrast, gasoline cars showed a 4% increase, reaching 513,755 units, accounting for 36.4% of the market.

The alternative fuel segment continues to grow. Sales of pre-owned fully electric vehicles rose by 46.8% to 17,458 units, accounting for 1.2% of the market. Used plug-in hybrids (gasoline) are also gaining popularity: their sales grew by 38.3% to 25,980 vehicles, which is equivalent to 1.8% of the market.
