BYD Challenges European Hybrids: New Dolphin G DM-i with a 1000 km Range. BYD has officially launched the hybrid Dolphin G DM-i in Spain—a compact PHEV boasting a claimed range of over 1000 km. The model targets market leaders and promises to shake up the urban hybrid segment.

BYD has unveiled the new Dolphin G DM-i hybrid hatchback in Spain, which will arrive at the country's dealerships as early as June. The model immediately caught attention with its claimed range—over 1,000 km on a single tank and full charge—setting it apart from competitors in the B-segment.

The key feature of the Dolphin G DM-i is BYD's proprietary hybrid system, which combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor. The front electric motor delivers instant response and smooth power, while the intelligent control system automatically selects the optimal operating mode for maximum efficiency. According to the manufacturer, this is the first B-segment hybrid car in Europe to offer plug-in charging.

Technical details and competitors

The dimensions of the Dolphin G DM-i are 4.16 meters long and 1.82 meters wide, allowing it to compete directly with models like the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, MG 3 Hybrid, and the new-generation Renault Clio. BYD notes that the hybrid Dolphin G DM-i is different from the already familiar all-electric BYD Dolphin, both technically and visually. The PHEV features a design aligned with the brand's latest trends and is slightly more compact: the electric version is 130 mm longer and 50 mm wider.

BYD has not yet disclosed all technical specifications, but according to available information, the Dolphin G DM-i may receive the powertrain from the Atto 2 DM-i. In this case, two versions are possible: the first—with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 166 hp, a 7.8 kWh battery, and an electric-only range of up to 40 km; the second—with a total output of 212 hp, an 18 kWh battery, and the ability to travel up to 90 km with zero emissions. The final specifications for Europe will be announced closer to the start of sales.

Positioning and BYD's Plans

The Dolphin G DM-i will become part of BYD’s expanding PHEV lineup, which already includes the Atto 2 DM-i, Seal U DM-i, and Seal 6 DM-i, as well as the Seal 6 DM-i Touring wagon. The company is clearly aiming to offer European buyers a more affordable and technologically advanced alternative to conventional hybrids. As BYD's Executive Vice President Stella Li noted, the brand’s mission is to reshape customer expectations of urban vehicles during the transition to electromobility: “Extended electric autonomy, an intelligent hybrid system, and advanced digital features make sustainable mobility more accessible and practical for Europeans.”

The first deliveries of the Dolphin G DM-i in Spain are expected as early as the end of June. In the coming weeks, the model will also arrive in other European markets. Notably, amid growing competition among hybrids and electric vehicles, BYD is actively expanding its presence in Europe, as evidenced by recent news about the launch of new Volkswagen electric vans—for more details, see the article on trends in the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

The launch of the Dolphin G DM-i could mark an important milestone for the urban hybrid segment: the model combines extended range, advanced hybrid technology, and a focus on European standards. Competition in this class is expected to intensify significantly in the coming months.
