France has become the first country to use the Airbus A400M firefighting kit in a real wildfire, unleashing 20,000 liters of retardant in under ten seconds. Spain, despite owning 14 A400M aircraft, is still waiting for its own certification and operational rollout.

On July 25, France became the first nation to deploy the Airbus A400M firefighting kit in an actual wildfire, releasing 20,000 liters of fire retardant in a matter of seconds. The system, developed by Airbus, is designed to transform the military transport aircraft into a powerful tool against large-scale forest fires. Yet, despite Spain’s early involvement in the project and its fleet of 14 A400M planes, Spanish crews are still unable to use the technology as development and certification remain incomplete.

The Spanish government showcased the A400M firefighting kit on May 21, 2026, presenting it as a key reinforcement for the national wildfire response campaign. However, two months later, none of Spain’s aircraft are cleared for operational use. Airbus has confirmed that only a single prototype exists, which was handed to France for experimental deployment during the Gironde wildfires. The French government, after signing an agreement with Airbus, authorized the kit’s use in real conditions, making France the first to test its effectiveness on the front lines.

Spain’s Fleet Still Grounded

Spain’s Air and Space Force operates 14 A400M aircraft, with a fifteenth on order. However, none are currently certified for firefighting missions. The process requires not only technical validation and flight testing but also specific crew training and regulatory approval. While there were initial plans to equip at least one Spanish plane this year, no official entry-into-service date has been set. Airbus has deferred all questions about the timeline to Spain’s Ministry of Defence. For now, Spain continues to rely on its existing aerial and ground firefighting resources, including the Canadair CL-415 fleet and specialized forest fire brigades.

How the Kit Works

The A400M firefighting kit is a removable system that fits inside the aircraft’s cargo bay. It consists of a large tank secured to the floor, which releases water or retardant by gravity through the rear ramp—without any permanent modifications to the plane. Once the kit is removed, the A400M returns to its standard transport role. In tests, the aircraft has dropped up to 20,000 liters in less than ten seconds, flying at around 230 km/h and at altitudes below 30 meters. Under optimal conditions, a single drop can create a firebreak 400 to 500 meters long.

Complement, Not Replacement

The A400M’s massive drop capacity is equivalent to more than three Canadair CL-415 sorties or two Dash aircraft loads. Its main advantage lies in quickly laying down wide barriers of retardant ahead of advancing flames or protecting critical infrastructure. However, after each drop, the A400M must return to an airbase to reload, unlike the Canadair, which can scoop water from lakes or the sea and return rapidly to the fire. As a result, the A400M is intended as a reinforcement for major incidents, not a substitute for amphibious firefighting planes. From Testing to Real-World Use

Airbus first tested the kit in Spain in July 2022, working with the 43 Grupo of the Air and Space Force. A refined version was trialed in 2023, and by April 2025, independent tests in Nîmes, France, evaluated the system’s distribution and concentration capabilities. The French deployment in July 2026 marks the first operational use in a real wildfire, providing valuable data on the kit’s effectiveness and informing decisions about broader adoption. Spain, despite announcing the system as part of its national strategy, remains in the final stages of development and certification before its own A400M fleet can join the fight against wildfires.
