Geely has rolled out a revamped EX5 SUV with a 333 CV motor and up to 521 km of range. The move comes as sales in China tumble, forcing the brand to up its game in the electric SUV race.
Geely is not sitting back. The company has seen EX5 sales in China drop by 45.9% in the first eight months of 2026. That is a steep fall. Now, Geely is moving fast. The automaker has revealed a fully upgraded version of its electric SUV—called the Geely E5 in Spain. The new model will officially launch in China on September 23. Geely wants to win back buyers with more power and longer range.
The biggest change is the motor. The new EX5 uses a rear-mounted electric unit that puts out 245 kW, or 333 CV. That is 125 CV more than the current Spanish-market version. This pushes the EX5 into a new league for compact electric SUVs.
The updated Geely EX5 is built on an 800-volt platform and supports 6C fast charging, allowing for significantly reduced charging times compared to previous models.
Geely is not just chasing speed. The EX5 now runs on an 800-volt high-voltage platform. This means faster charging and better efficiency. Buyers can pick from two battery packs: a 61.5 kWh version with 550 km CLTC (451 km WLTP), or a 70 kWh pack that stretches to 635 km CLTC (521 km WLTP). The old model managed only 430 to 475 km WLTP. That is a big jump.
The outside keeps the same shape but gets sharper details. Standard door handles replace the old flush ones. A LiDAR sensor now sits on the roof. The bumpers look sportier with matte chrome trim. There is a front trunk—rare for this class—with 160 liters of space and a 50 kg load limit. The hood opens electrically. Nineteen-inch wheels and a rear driver-side charging port finish the look.
Inside, the cabin centers on a floating touchscreen, digital gauges, and a head-up display. The gear selector moves behind the steering wheel. The center tunnel holds a wireless phone charger, rotary selector, and real buttons for key controls. Comfort features include the Flyme Sound audio system, a rear armrest, and a panoramic glass roof. On the tech side, the EX5 adds the G-ASD G-Pilot H5 assisted driving suite. This supports navigation-based autopilot in both city and highway driving.
The new EX5 launched in China in five trim levels, with prices ranging from 97,800 to 137,800 yuan. According to CarNewsChina, this relaunch follows a period of declining sales, with only 40,776 units delivered from January to August 2026—down nearly 46% year-on-year.
The EX5 measures 4,636 mm long, 1,920 mm wide, and 1,670 mm high. The wheelbase is 2,750 mm. That is just 13 mm shorter than the Skoda Enyaq. It puts the EX5 right in the European C-SUV class. The size and features make it a practical pick for families and tech-focused drivers.
Geely is under pressure. Only 40,776 EX5 units sold in China from January to August 2026. That is a sharp drop from last year. The company is betting that more power and longer range will turn things around before the year ends. Rivals are not standing still. Fiat, for example, has just launched the Grande Panda petrol crossover to target budget city drivers, as reported earlier.
Even with the EX5’s big upgrade, Geely’s main sales driver is still the EX2 (sold as the Geely E2 in Spain). It is China’s top-selling electric car right now. The EX5 update shows Geely is not giving up ground in the electric SUV fight. The company is ready to overhaul its lineup to stay in the game. For Spanish buyers, the new E5 means a stronger, better-equipped electric SUV is coming. It could set a new standard for value and performance in its class.
