A man was taken into custody late last night in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, after police found another man’s body on a public street showing clear signs of violence. A second man was injured and taken to hospital. The Mossos d’Esquadra’s Criminal Investigation Division has opened an investigation.
Information from the Generalitat Police, officers responded to an emergency call around 11 p.m. reporting a seriously injured person in the area. Several patrol units and medical teams from the Emergency Medical Service were sent to the scene. They found one man dead and another wounded, apparently in the same violent episode.
Police secured the area and arrested a 35-year-old man nearby on suspicion of involvement in the attack. Investigators have not disclosed the victim’s identity or what led to the violence as they gather evidence and establish the sequence of events.
The arrest comes amid wider concern about violent incidents involving young groups in Catalonia. A separate shooting at Parc de les Planes in L’Hospitalet on 28 March 2026 killed a 28-year-old man and injured another person. ARA reported that three youths were arrested in connection with that case, and investigators found a firearm and ammunition at one detainee’s home. The victim was not identified as belonging to a gang; reported gang links concerned the alleged perpetrators.
ARA has described a resurgence of violent youth-group activity in Barcelona and L’Hospitalet, as well as incidents in parts of the Vallès and in Cubelles. The cases do not necessarily involve the same groups or connected disputes. The Mossos d’Esquadra were reportedly preparing a dedicated plan in response, with specific operations planned in Barcelona and L’Hospitalet. A local operation was already underway in Barcelona.
The case comes amid a broader decline in crime rates in Catalonia. Official data show that overall reported offences in the region fell by 7.6% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. Property crimes such as theft fell particularly sharply, with figures nearly 13% below the average recorded between 2022 and 2025. Separately, Mossos d’Esquadra figures cited in a parliamentary response recorded 1,786 violent robberies involving bladed weapons between January and June 2026, 5.6% below the average for the same periods in the previous two years. That category measures knife-related robberies, not homicide or violent crime as a whole.
