If a patient can provide credible medical evidence—such as conflicting medical reports, proof that a treatment poses a health risk, or other substantial reasons—Social Security may accept these justifications and maintain the benefit. The key factor is whether the refusal or abandonment of treatment is supported by a legitimate, documented cause.
During the period of temporary incapacity, the expectation is that the worker will make every effort to recover and return to their job as soon as possible.
