This applies not only to those on sick leave, but also to anyone involved in any process for benefits or disability recognition.
According to changes published in the BOE, the government is accelerating the move to digital communications. Decisions, document requests, invitations for medical examinations, and other important messages are now delivered through special online services. The main goal is to reduce bureaucracy and speed up case processing, but at the same time, citizens now have a new responsibility: to independently and regularly check electronic notifications.
Electronic notifications instead of letters
Previously, most official messages were sent by regular mail. Now, Social Security is relying on electronic channels. This means that important information may appear in your personal account or on a special platform, and if a person does not check the notification on time, the procedure will still be considered complete—the deadline will start counting from the moment the message is sent in the system.
Those receiving temporary incapacity benefits, applying for disability, or dealing with any state authority process should pay special attention to the new rules. Missing a notification can result in missed deadlines or even suspension of payments.
DEHú — the main tool
The key service for receiving notifications is the Dirección Electrónica Habilitada Única (DEHú) platform. Through it, citizens can view all messages from various government bodies, including Social Security. This continues the digitalization process started back in 2023, when paper medical leave certificates were no longer required to be submitted to employers — now all data is sent directly from medical institutions to the INSS and then to companies.
What to do to avoid missing important messages
Experts advise regularly checking DEHú and other official platforms, especially if you are waiting for a decision on payments, an invitation for a medical examination, or a document request. Ignoring digital notifications does not exempt you from responsibility — the process proceeds according to established deadlines, even if the message was not read.
At the same time, the transition to electronic notifications raises concerns about digital inequality. Older people or those who do not use the internet may face difficulties accessing important information. In such cases, it is recommended to seek help from relatives or social services.
