China Builds Underwater High-Speed Train: 123 km Journey in 40 Minutes. A unique underwater tunnel for high-speed trains is being developed between Dalian and Yantai. Traveling between the Chinese cities of Dalian and Yantai today requires considerable patience: by land, the journey takes about six hours, while by ferry it's more than eight. However, in the coming years, the situation may change dramatically: China is preparing to launch the ambitious Bohai Strait Tunnel project—the country’s first underwater railway tunnel, which will connect two major economic zones across the Bohai Strait.
According to engineers, trains will run through the tunnel at speeds of up to 250 km/h, covering the 123-kilometer distance in just 40 minutes. This will not only speed up passenger transport but also significantly increase the efficiency of freight traffic between the north and east of the country. As noted by Talent24h, the project is designed to integrate with the existing high-speed rail network, allowing passengers and cargo to move between regions without transfers.
Technical challenges
Building an underwater tunnel of this scale is no easy task. The project envisions three parallel galleries: two for train traffic and one for emergency and technical needs. Special attention is given to the watertightness of the structure, ventilation and monitoring systems, as well as safety in case of emergencies. The Bohai Strait area is known for its complex geology and seismic activity, so engineers are equipping the project with modern control systems, leak detectors, and separate control centers for rapid response.
Economics and timelines
Investments in the Bohai Strait Tunnel are expected to range from 220 to 300 billion yuan. According to preliminary estimates, the tunnel could be operational by 2035. In addition to the obvious time savings for passengers, the project is expected to give a strong boost to logistics development, create thousands of jobs, and stimulate infrastructure projects in the surrounding regions.
