Toyota has launched the Corolla Cross Z Adventure in Japan, blending the SUV’s practicality with bold Land Cruiser styling to celebrate the Corolla’s 60th anniversary. The exclusive model features unique design cues and upgraded tech, but won’t be sold outside Japan.
Toyota has marked the 60th anniversary of the iconic Corolla by introducing a striking new edition: the Toyota Corolla Cross Z Adventure. This special model, available exclusively in Japan, stands out with a bold front grille reminiscent of the legendary Land Cruiser, signaling a deliberate shift toward a more rugged and distinctive look for the compact SUV.
The Z Adventure’s most eye-catching feature is its redesigned front end. Departing from the standard Corolla Cross styling, it adopts a grille similar to the U.S. version, but with an optional Z Adventure Set that replaces the traditional badge with a prominent white "TOYOTA" script—an unmistakable nod to the Land Cruiser’s heritage. This package also adds black exterior cladding, metallic-finish skid plates, matte grey 17-inch alloy wheels, and commemorative 60th anniversary decals on the front fenders. Buyers can choose from exclusive paint options, including Urban Khaki, Mud Bath, Platinum White Pearl Mica, and Black Mica, all paired with a contrasting black roof.
Inside, the Z Adventure maintains the familiar Corolla Cross layout but introduces unique details. The seats combine synthetic leather and fabric in black and Mineral tones, accented by contrasting stitching. The steering wheel, gear lever, and select trim pieces feature Smoke Silver Metallic inserts, setting this edition apart from the rest of the lineup.
Alongside the Z Adventure, Toyota has updated the Corolla Cross range in Japan with enhanced features for higher trims like the HEV Z and GR Sport. Notable additions include a heated steering wheel as standard, advanced driver assistance systems such as blind spot monitoring, Safe Exit Assist to prevent door opening accidents, a panoramic camera with transparent underfloor view, and a more sophisticated automatic parking system.
Under the hood, the Corolla Cross remains unchanged for the Japanese market, continuing with a self-charging hybrid system based on a 1.8-liter petrol engine. The front-wheel-drive version pairs a 97 hp gasoline engine with a 95 hp electric motor, while the E-Four all-wheel-drive variant adds a 41 hp electric motor on the rear axle for improved traction on slippery surfaces.
Pricing for the refreshed Corolla Cross lineup starts at 3,613,500 yen (about €22,400), with the GR Sport trim reaching 4,077,700 yen (around €25,300). The Z Adventure E-Four is priced at 3,921,500 yen (approximately €24,300), and the full Z Adventure Set package brings the total to 4,218,500 yen (about €26,100). These figures reflect the model’s positioning as a premium, commemorative edition within the Japanese market.
While the Z Adventure is not expected to be offered outside Japan, the broader equipment upgrades introduced with this update are likely to appear in other markets. In Spain, for example, the Toyota Corolla Cross is currently available from €36,500, with Style and GR Sport trims and two hybrid powertrains: the Hybrid 140 (front-wheel drive only) and the more powerful Hybrid 200, which can be specified with either front or all-wheel drive.
This move by Toyota highlights a growing trend among automakers to blend heritage design cues with modern models, appealing to both nostalgia and current market demands. The Corolla Cross Z Adventure’s approach echoes strategies seen in other segments, such as the recent push by Mercedes to redefine SUV expectations with models like the GLC 400 EQ 4Matic, which combines luxury, range, and advanced technology.
As the Corolla celebrates six decades of global success, Toyota’s decision to create a Japan-only special edition underscores the brand’s commitment to its domestic audience while reinforcing the Corolla’s status as a symbol of reliability and adaptability. For international buyers, the latest updates to the Corolla Cross range offer a glimpse of what’s to come as Toyota continues to evolve its best-selling nameplate.
