The ID. UNYX 09 is 5.08 meters long. That's longer than the Passat sold in Spain and even bigger than the Passat plug-in hybrid for China. It measures 1.98 meters wide and 1.526 meters high, with a wheelbase of 3.03 meters. This puts it among the largest sedans in its class. Volkswagen says the car will go on sale in China on September 24. Official data from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) shows the ID. UNYX 09 cleared its last regulatory step in July by entering the MIIT catalog, which is needed before sales can start in China.
The ID. UNYX 09 is the second model jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng specifically for the Chinese market, following the ID. UNYX 08 that entered mass production in March 2026.
Buyers can pick between a single-motor rear-wheel drive version with 313 horsepower or a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup with 370 kW, which equals 503 horsepower. The heaviest version weighs up to 2,307 kg, but the top model still reaches 200 km/h. CATL supplies the batteries, with options of 82 kWh and 95 kWh. These give the car a range of 630 km or 730 km, though these numbers use the CLTC cycle, which is known to be optimistic in China. Leading Chinese automotive media confirm that both powertrains and battery choices were listed in regulatory filings, so the specs are official and meet local rules.
Volkswagen Anhui, the joint venture building the car, has loaded the ID. UNYX 09 with high-end features as standard. Every version comes with autonomous driving aids and an AI-based assistant. Depending on the trim, buyers can get extras like a panoramic glass roof, Bremboo sports brakes, and wheels up to 21 inches. Industry analysts point out that the car went from concept to launch in just 24 months. This shows how quickly Volkswagen and Xpeng can move to keep up with China's fast-changing EV market.
Industry sources indicate that local development with Xpeng has reduced project costs for Volkswagen by at least 40%, underlining the economic benefits of this strategic partnership. In addition, Volkswagen is expanding its technological base in China, developing its own electronic architecture and key EV components for future models.
For Spanish drivers, the ID. UNYX 09 highlights the growing gap between what is sold in China and what reaches Europe. Volkswagen still sells the Passat in Spain, but the most advanced electric sedans are out of reach. This isn't the only example. As reported earlier, Spain's car market faces its own problems, from older vehicles to tougher inspections, making new high-tech models even more important.
Volkswagen's choice to keep the UNYX 09 for China is a clear business move. The brand is chasing local demand and the fast pace of China's EV scene. For now, European buyers can only watch as the latest tech stays in the East. There's no sign these top-spec models will come over soon.
