The new ID. UNYX 09 pairs an electric powertrain with a range of up to 730 km and peak output of 503 horsepower. Developed with Xpeng, the model is intended for China only, so Spanish drivers won’t see it. Volkswagen says the UNYX line is designed for the Chinese market and local needs.
The ID. UNYX 09 is 5.08 meters long, longer than the Passat sold in Spain and larger than the Passat plug-in hybrid for China. It measures 1.98 meters wide and 1.526 meters high, with a wheelbase of 3.03 meters, putting it among the largest sedans in its class. Volkswagen says the car will go on sale in China on September 24. Data from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) shows the ID. UNYX 09 cleared its final regulatory step in July, when it entered the MIIT catalog required before sales can begin in China. It is the second model Volkswagen and Xpeng have jointly developed specifically for the Chinese market. The first was the ID. UNYX 08, which entered mass production in March 2026.
Buyers can choose a single-motor, rear-wheel-lead version with 313 horsepower or a dual-motor, all-wheel-lead setup producing 370 kW, equivalent to 503 horsepower. The heaviest version weighs up to 2,307 kg, while the top model reaches 200 km/h. CATL supplies the batteries, which come in 82 kWh and 95 kWh capacities and deliver ranges of 630 km and 730 km, respectively. These figures use the CLTC cycle, known for optimistic estimates in China. Leading Chinese automotive media report that both powertrains appeared in regulatory filings, as did both battery options. That makes the specifications official and compliant with local rules.
Volkswagen Anhui, the joint venture building the car, has made several high-end features standard on the ID. UNYX 09. Every version includes autonomous driving aids and an AI-based assistant. Depending on the trim, buyers can get a panoramic glass roof. Brembo sports brakes are also available, and wheel sizes go up to 21 inches. Industry analysts say the car moved from concept to launch in just 24 months. That pace shows how quickly Volkswagen and Xpeng can move in China’s fast-changing EV market. Industry sources say developing the car locally with Xpeng has cut Volkswagen’s project costs by at least 40%. Volkswagen is also expanding its technological base in China, where it is developing its own electronic architecture and basic EV components for future models.
For Spanish drivers, the ID. UNYX 09 highlights the growing gap between what sells in China and what reaches Europe. Volkswagen still sells the Passat in Spain, while its most advanced electric sedans remain out of reach. As reported earlier, Spain’s car market faces problems of its own, including older vehicles and tougher inspections, making new high-tech models even more impressive.
Volkswagen’s decision to keep the UNYX 09 in China reflects its focus on local demand and the country’s fast-moving EV market. For now, European buyers can only watch as the latest technology stays in the East. There’s no sign these top-spec models will come to Europe soon. The most advanced electric sedans are being built for markets where competition for buyers is toughest, leaving Spain and much of Europe on the sidelines.
