Luxembourg Prepares for Three-Day Celebrations for the Coronation of New Grand Duke Guillaume

Coronation of Guillaume of Luxembourg: Tiara Banquet, Drone Show, and Public Celebrations

Major changes are on the horizon for Luxembourg. The country is gearing up for a historic event. The entire nation is holding its breath in anticipation. The festivities promise to be magnificent.

The Grand Duchy stands on the threshold of a new historical chapter. After a quarter of a century on the throne, Grand Duke Henri is preparing to hand over the reins to his eldest son. This decision, announced in last year’s Christmas address, sets in motion the centuries-old succession process. The transfer of power will begin in October and follows a long-standing tradition in which the heir first assumes the status of “Lieutenant-Representative,” taking on key constitutional powers to ensure a smooth transition into the role of head of state.

His Royal Highness the Hereditary Grand Duke will ascend the throne accompanied by his wife, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie. There is just one week left until the main event, known locally as “Trounwiessel.” The court has already announced a program of festivities that will span the entire country. The future monarch has requested that the official solemnity of the ceremonies be combined with widespread public celebrations. To mark this milestone, an official logo featuring a crown and the name of the enthronement ritual has been created and presented to the public.

The series of events will begin on Friday, October 3. The capital will host the formal ceremonies, starting at 10 a.m. in the palace with the abdication of Grand Duke Henri. This moment promises to be especially moving for the 70-year-old sovereign and his wife, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, who could barely hold back tears during her last National Day in June. An hour later, the new ruler will be sworn in at the Chamber of Deputies. By noon, the country will already have a new head of state. The heir himself, now 42, admitted in a recent interview with the national channel RTL that he feels a bit nervous. A year ago, on October 8, 2024, after being appointed as ‘Lieutenant-Representative,’ he spoke of slight stress, understanding that this day was inevitable, but still feeling anxious.

He also shared his thoughts on the need to adapt to a vast range of new responsibilities, including international affairs, diplomacy, and the signing of decrees and laws. “All of this is familiar to me, but I need to get used to it,” he noted. At the same time, the future ruler assured that he has several major projects for the development of the duchy. He believes his age is ideal for taking office, as it combines both energy and accumulated experience, expressing deep gratitude to his father for the preparation.

Immediately after taking the oath, the new Grand Ducal couple will appear on the palace balcony. Their children, five-year-old Charles and two-year-old François, will be by their side. This will mark the family’s first official public appearance in their new status. Afterwards, they will proceed to the town hall to greet the crowd gathered in the square named after William II, Grand Duke and King of the Netherlands from 1840 to 1849. Later, the new head of state will attend a reception hosted by government members, and in the evening, a formal dinner will be held at the palace. All key moments of the day will be broadcast live.

The following day, October 4, will be dedicated to the monarch’s tour around the country to meet with citizens. According to the official statement from the court, this is a way to pay tribute to the diversity, talents, and cultural wealth of the nation. The route will begin in the east, in Grevenmacher, where meetings with athletes are planned. In Wiltz, Steinfort, and Dudelange, he will meet with artists and healthcare workers, as well as attend a dance performance. Folk festivals will be held in each of these cities.

The highlight of the day will be the visit of the Grand Ducal couple to the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, named after the new ruler’s great-grandmother and the longest-reigning monarch in the country’s history. This bridge is a symbol of the nation’s endurance. The couple will cross it to the sound of orchestras and accompanied by a “multicolored ballet,” as described by the palace’s press service. The second day will conclude with an impressive drone light show and a large concert at GLACIS Square.

On Sunday, October 5, at 11 a.m., a thanksgiving service “Te Deum” in honor of the new sovereign will be held at Notre-Dame Cathedral, led by Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich. This solemn ceremony will mark the grand finale of the three days of celebrations.
