Spanish broadcaster RTVE has decided to reconsider the fate of the entertainment show that previously failed to secure a spot on air. The program La Garita, created in the zapping genre and hosted by comedians José Juan Vaquero (J.J. Vaquero) and Álex Clavero, did not meet expectations this summer as a replacement for the popular show La Revuelta.
After a brief run on La 1, where the project launched in July, La Garita quickly lost viewers’ interest. The premiere drew a 9.6% share and almost one million viewers, but by the second episode, the numbers had dropped to 7.4% and 691,000 people. The decline was due not only to falling ratings but also negative feedback on social media and lukewarm reviews from critics. As a result, RTVE management decided to end the show after two episodes, bringing back the more successful Viaje al centro de la tele.
Despite the setback, the hosts did not hide their disappointment and responded to the cancellation with humor. Their self-irony and lightheartedness fit the overall tone of the show, where irony and sarcasm take center stage.
The project was produced with the involvement of 100 Balas (The Mediapro Studio) and Globomedia, with a budget of €917,178. Now, to recoup the investment, RTVE is bringing La Garita back to air, but this time on La 2, where archive and educational programs traditionally air on weekends. A new episode is scheduled for the evening of September 27, right after Al cielo con ella.
It has not yet been announced how many episodes are planned for release. However, the return of La Garita indicates an attempt to reach a new audience more in line with La 2’s profile. The channel traditionally attracts a smaller but loyal viewership, which could give the project a chance for a more stable existence.
