In Catalonia, the authorities have announced new steps to integrate migrants and support the Catalan language. The head of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, in an official statement for Saint George’s Day (Sant Jordi), emphasized that the legalization process for migrants, initiated by the central government, will be especially significant for the region. According to him, these are people who have long been living in Catalonia, working, raising children, and supporting the economy.
Illa noted that legalization is not only a matter of the past, when many Catalans themselves were forced to emigrate, but also a step toward the future. He stated that the authorities want to give these people the opportunity to fully participate in society, with equal rights and responsibilities. His address stressed that these are neighbors, parents of students, and workers who have already become part of daily life in Catalonia.
Language as a tool for integration
Special attention in the address was given to the Catalan language. Illa called it a meeting point for all cultures of the region and said that every new speaker is a collective success for Catalonia. In 2026, the authorities plan to offer a record 150,000 spots in Catalan courses to make the language accessible to everyone, including new residents of the region.
This move was announced against the backdrop of a recent decision by the Supreme Court of Catalonia regarding the use of Catalan in schools and ongoing debates about the future of the language. Illa emphasized that language should remain a tool for inclusion, not division, and called for joint efforts to maintain its vitality.
Social measures and support
The Catalan authorities have also launched a series of new social initiatives. Among them are housing programs and support for patients with serious illnesses, particularly ALS (ELA). Illa noted that these measures aim to put people at the center of regional policy.
In his address, he thanked cultural workers, bookshop owners, and florists who make the Sant Jordi celebration special for all residents. According to the head of the Generalitat, this day brings people together regardless of origin or beliefs.
A call for peace
Amid international tensions linked to the conflict in the Middle East, Illa focused in particular on the subject of peace. He stated that in Catalonia, human lives matter more than economic indicators. According to him, the region stands for diplomatic solutions and ending violence, stressing that war can always be avoided.
