The Feria de Abril has begun in Seville, and from the very first days the festivities have been affected by unusually high temperatures. According to local meteorologists, on Tuesday the thermometers will reach 32 ºC, which is about 10 degrees above the average for this time of year. Such a heatwave is more typical for June than for the second half of April.
Nighttime temperatures also remain high: the minimum values will not drop below 15 ºC throughout the week. This adds extra strain for participants and guests of the Feria de Abril, especially during the evening and night hours, when cooler temperatures are usually expected.
Temperature fluctuations
After peaking on Tuesday, a slight decrease in temperature is expected on Wednesday, with maximums dropping below 30 ºC. By Friday, a further decrease to 26 ºC is forecast, but the heat is expected to return by the weekend: on Sunday temperatures may rise again to 30 ºC. Such swings could affect the well-being and plans of residents, as well as the organization of events during the Feria de Abril.
Chance of rain
Despite predominantly dry and stable weather, meteorologists warn of the possibility of brief showers. Already on Tuesday and into Wednesday night, cloudy periods are possible, and on Wednesday morning light rain cannot be ruled out. Forecasts indicate that on Thursday and Friday, thunderclouds may reach the outskirts of Seville in the afternoon, provoking local downpours. The most notable rainfall is expected overnight into Saturday, when the intensity of the rain may increase.
Context and consequences
Abnormal heat and unstable weather at the Feria de Abril have continued the weather fluctuations observed across Spain in recent weeks. Recently, the country had already experienced a sudden change in temperature — a sharp cold snap replaced summer heat in just two days. Now, Seville once again finds itself at the center of weather anomalies, impacting the usual course of one of the city’s main festivals.
Organizers of the Feria de Abril and city services advise residents and visitors to closely monitor forecasts and consider potential weather changes when planning visits to festive events. In conditions of heat and possible rain, it is especially important to take precautions and be prepared for sudden changes.
