Symbolic Gesture of Morante de la Puebla’s Son After Father’s Serious Injury

The Morante family back in the spotlight after the famous bullfighter’s injury

Morante de la Puebla was hospitalized following a severe injury in the arena. His son, José Antonio, made a visible gesture on social media. Family and fans are awaiting updates on the condition of the renowned torero.

The Morante de la Puebla family is at the center of Spanish society news. After the renowned torero was admitted to intensive care with a severe injury, his eldest son, José Antonio Morante Antúnez, unexpectedly came into the spotlight, drawing attention to himself and to the family’s support. His gesture on social media became a topic of discussion among fans and colleagues, and the situation surrounding the famous matador’s health once again propelled the Morante dynasty to the top of the news.

Injury in the arena

An evening at La Maestranza, meant to launch the festive Feria de Abril celebrations, turned into a real ordeal for Morante de la Puebla. According to Divinity, the fourth bull, named Clandestino from the Hermanos García Jiménez ranch, inflicted a serious injury on the torero during the opening cape greeting. The audience froze: Morante remained lying on the sand as his team rushed him to the arena’s infirmary. The operation lasted two hours, and the medical report left no doubt as to the seriousness of the situation: sphincter muscle damage and a 1.5 cm puncture to the posterior wall of the rectum. The doctors’ prognosis was extremely grave; Morante spent the night in intensive care at Viamed hospital in Seville.

Family support and symbolism

While doctors cautiously speak of a stable but serious condition, attention has shifted to the bullfighter’s immediate circle. There are three children in Morante’s family, and it is the eldest son, José Antonio Morante Antúnez, who has become the focus of discussion. The young footballer, who plays for Real Betis youth team and Spain’s U-19 squad, did not make any public statements, but chose a different path: first posting a photo of his father in the center of the arena, and then a black-and-white image of a Paso de Misterio from the Hermandad del Baratillo. This depiction—a scene with Nuestra Señora de la Piedad and the body of Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia—has long been a symbol among Seville’s bullfighters, especially in times of tragedy and hardship. The gesture did not go unnoticed: the public saw in it not only respect for tradition, but also a subtle indication of the family’s inner strength.

Doctors, predictions, and waiting

The surgery was performed by surgeon Octavio Mulet, who emphasized in an interview with Mundotoro the complexity of the procedure and the need to restore the sphincters. According to him, Morante is in pain but remains in stable condition. Doctors note that despite the severity of the injury, the spine was not affected—this came as some relief for the family and fans. Over the next ten days, doctors will monitor the healing process, but for now any predictions remain cautious.

Family gestures and social tradition

Stories of how celebrities’ children react to their parents’ trials always spark particular public interest. One recalls that in another well-known sports family a similar gesture of support became a topic of discussion: the Guerrero family publicly thanked supporters for the first time after their loss. In the case of Morante de la Puebla, José Antonio’s choice highlighted not only family unity but also a deep connection with the culture and traditions of Seville. While fans and colleagues await further news about the matador’s condition, it is precisely such details that become significant for the entire Spanish society chronicle.
