Angel Studios' "Young Washington" opened with $19.3M, just below forecasts. The film attracted a strong older audience and performed best in central US regions. A sequel, "1776", is already in development.

Angel Studios' new historical film "Young Washington" entered the US box office with a $19.3 million opening weekend, falling short of the studio's initial $20.8 million projection but still surpassing industry expectations. The film, directed by Jon Erwin and starring William Franklyn-Miller as George Washington, became the distributor's second-best three-day debut, only slightly behind last year's "Sound of Freedom" and trailing "David" for the top spot.

Despite a slower Sunday, where ticket sales reached $4.1 million instead of the anticipated $5.6 million, "Young Washington" outperformed the $15 million forecasted by industry analysts. The film's strongest results came from the Mountain, Midwest, Southcentral, and South regions of the United States, which together accounted for 67% of the total weekend revenue. Notably, these figures were achieved without the support of premium large-format screens, highlighting the film's appeal in standard cinemas.

The Megaplex 18 Thanksgiving Point in Utah emerged as the top-grossing venue, collecting $111,000 to date. On July 4th, "Young Washington" ranked second at the domestic box office, earning $7.6 million and finishing behind "Minions & Monsters". The film attracted a significant older audience, with viewers over 55 making up 47% of attendees—a notable shift in post-pandemic cinema trends. Audience feedback was positive, with an A grade from CinemaScore and an 81% definite recommend rate on Screen Engine/Rentrak’s PostTrak.

Jon Erwin, who also co-wrote and produced the film, confirmed that a sequel titled "1776" is already in development, focusing on the Revolutionary War period. Brandon Purdie, EVP Theatrical at Angel Studios, acknowledged the film's reception during the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations and credited partners Wonder Project and 2521 Entertainment for their roles in the production.

"Young Washington" follows the success of Angel Studios' previous release, "Sound of Freedom", which opened to $19.6 million over three days and reached $184.1 million in total US box office revenue. The studio continues to focus on stories rooted in American history and values, aligning its releases with significant national milestones. The strong turnout for "Young Washington" among older viewers may signal a renewed interest in historical cinema, especially as the US marks its 250th year since independence. For Spanish audiences, the film's performance highlights ongoing trends in American cinema and the growing influence of independent distributors like Angel Studios in shaping the box office landscape.

For context, Angel Studios has positioned itself as a key player in the US independent film market, often targeting audiences seeking values-based content. The studio's recent successes suggest a shift in viewing habits, with older demographics returning to theaters and regional markets playing a larger role in box office results. As the industry adapts to post-pandemic realities, the performance of films like "Young Washington" may influence future distribution strategies both in the US and internationally.
