On 16 June, 23-year-old legionnaire Kevin Parra Mejía died during physical training with the Tercio “Duque de Alba” 2º de La Legión in Ceuta. He suffered a suspected cardiorespiratory arrest while exercising outside the barracks. Emergency personnel tried to resuscitate him, but he could not be revived. The cause remained under investigation. The circumstances have not established a definitive medical or operational explanation.
That same day, a trainee at the Centro de Formación de Tropa nº 1 in Cáceres was hospitalized in critical condition after suspected heatstroke during outdoor drills. He was admitted to intensive care and intubated. The case, alongside Parra Mejía’s death, has sharpened the association’s calls to examine safety arrangements for physical training in high temperatures. The events occurred at different facilities and under different circumstances.
On 15 June, a senior Navy corporal was found dead at the Galeaza logistics accommodation in San Fernando, Cádiz. The cause of death was under judicial investigation. A day earlier, a VAMTAC military vehicle accident at the San Gregorio training ground in Zaragoza left two soldiers needing medical care.
Another fatal accident occurred on 22 October at Base Guzmán el Bueno X in Cerro Muriano, Córdoba, where servicemember Sergio Ajenjo Cordero was struck by a vehicle inside the installation. The Guardia Civil took over the investigation, information from reporting by Público and ABC. This incident is separate from the June parachute death. It provides no evidence of a shared cause.
The incidents have renewed debate over formally recognizing military service as a high-risk profession, a legislative change described as pending.
