The Los Angeles police are investigating the murder of 81-year-old actor James Handy, who appeared in "Top Gun: Maverick," "Logan," and other well-known films. According to police, the tragedy occurred Wednesday morning in the residential neighborhood of Tarzana. The suspect is 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s friend, who was detained at the scene following a strange 911 call.
The call came in around 9:30 a.m.: a man reported that he had committed a murder. Responding officers found Handy unconscious with a stab wound to the chest in the yard of a house on Erwin Street. Paramedics took the actor to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Michael Gledhill, who lived in the same house with his mother and Handy, approached the police himself and confessed to the crime. He was detained and taken to Van Nuys jail, where he was booked on suspicion of murder. Bail was set at $2 million. Police stressed that the incident is isolated and there is no threat to the public.
James Handy was known for his roles in film and television since the 1970s. In "Top Gun: Maverick" he played a bartender, and in "Logan" — a doctor. He also appeared in "Jumanji," "Arachnophobia," and many popular crime series, including "Alias," "Criminal Minds," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Rizzoli & Isles," "CSI: NY," and "Cold Case." Colleagues described him as one of the finest character actors of his generation.
