Finnish Tourist Dies After 500-Meter Fall on Pico Balaitús. A 42-year-old tourist from Finland has died in the Pyrenees after falling from a height. Her companion was unharmed. Nine rescue operations were carried out in the region over the week.
On Saturday evening, a tragedy occurred on the slopes of Pico Balaitús in the municipality of Sallent de Gállego (Huesca province): a 42-year-old Finnish woman died after falling about 500 meters while descending a snowy section of the route. Her companion, a 53-year-old man, also from Finland, was unharmed. According to local authorities, the emergency call was received at 19:20, reporting that the couple was moving along the Gran Diagonal section when the woman slipped on the snow and fell down the slope.
GREIM rescue teams from Panticosa, an air unit from Huesca, and a doctor from the 061 emergency service were dispatched to the scene. The victim was found from a helicopter, but medics confirmed her death at the scene due to injuries incompatible with life. The body was evacuated to the Panticosa helipad and then handed over to the forensic service for further procedures at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Zaragoza.
This was the most serious incident of the past week, during which the mountain division of the Civil Guard recorded an increased number of accidents in the Pyrenees and throughout Huesca province. From May 26 to 30, GREIM units carried out nine rescue operations related to injuries, disorientation, and other incidents on the trails. These included assisting a 51-year-old man from Albacete suffering from cramps on Pico Mulleres, evacuating a 62-year-old tourist from Barcelona stranded on the slopes of Pleta de Ixea, and transporting a 42-year-old French cyclist with a broken arm after a fall in the Coda Sarten area.
On May 27, GREIM officers located and escorted to their car two women from Guadalajara and Zaragoza, aged 21 and 29, who got lost and became exhausted in the Barranco Culevillas area. The most intense day was last Saturday: within 24 hours, rescuers carried out five operations, including helping a 26-year-old resident of Vilanova i la Geltrú injured on Pico Chistau, and a 32-year-old man from Zaragoza with a knee dislocation near the Yaga River. Assistance was also provided to a 44-year-old woman from Huesca with an ankle injury while ascending Pico de Estos, and a 55-year-old man from Zaragoza showing signs of heatstroke near the Fenales refuge. In addition, a minor from Huesca suffered facial injuries and a broken elbow while training on snow in the Forau de Gorgotés area and was taken to San Jorge Hospital.
The increase in mountain incidents has coincided with the beginning of the summer season and a surge in tourist flows to the Pyrenees. According to RUSSPAIN, such incidents highlight the importance of following safety measures and the need for preparation, even for experienced travelers. For comparison, other regions of Spain have also reported cases where tourist routes have led to emergency service calls: for example, recently in a report on incidents at popular destinations, it was noted that the load on rescue services increases during periods of high tourist influx. Regional authorities remind people to take weather conditions into account and choose routes according to their physical abilities.
