Authorities in Barcelona province have dismantled two illegal dental clinics after detaining five individuals accused of posing as dentists. The Mossos d’Esquadra made the arrests on June 17 in Olesa de Montserrat and Esplugues de Llobregat, targeting suspects aged between 21 and 60. The operation followed complaints from patients who suffered physical injuries and financial losses after undergoing fraudulent dental procedures.
The investigation began in late April, when a witness alerted police to suspicious activity in several dental clinics. As the inquiry progressed, more victims came forward, describing incomplete treatments and lasting health issues linked to unqualified practitioners. According to the Mossos d’Esquadra, the suspects face charges including identity theft, fraud, professional misconduct, and causing bodily harm.
Police inspections at both clinics confirmed that neither facility operated legally. Officers seized computers, appointment records, and other documents, and temporarily sealed the premises to prevent further activity. None of the five detainees had prior criminal records. All have been brought before the duty court in Martorell for judicial proceedings.
Cases of unlicensed dental practice have drawn increasing attention in Spain. In 2023, a man was sentenced to over six years in prison by the Audiencia de Barcelona for treating nearly 80 patients without proper qualifications, leaving many with unfinished procedures or lasting oral injuries. The court also imposed a €4,800 fine and ordered compensation totaling around €450,000 for affected patients.
Spanish law requires all dental practitioners to hold recognized qualifications and be registered with the relevant professional body. The Ministry of Health and regional authorities regularly conduct inspections to detect unauthorized medical activity. Patients are advised to verify the credentials of healthcare providers before undergoing any treatment, as unlicensed practice can result in serious health risks and legal consequences for both practitioners and clinic owners.
