Madrid is equipping its EMT municipal bus fleet with 2,200 smart defibrillators, extending access to emergency cardiac equipment across the city’s public transport network. Passengers and members of the public who witness a cardiac emergency near a bus can use them.
In an emergency, a bystander can ask the driver for the defibrillator while emergency medical teams are on their way. The devices provide instructions to guide users through the critical period before professional responders arrive.
Automatic Emergency Alerts
The rollout is designed to connect defibrillator use with Madrid’s emergency response system, including the 112 emergency number. The city also coordinates municipal emergency services through CISEM. Policía Municipal and Bomberos share communications there, alongside SAMUR-Protección Civil, and coordinate with the regional 112 service.
An automated external defibrillator (AED) can assess a person’s heart rhythm and deliver a shock when indicated. Its prompts guide users through the steps for using the device. CPR and professional medical care remain impressive when responding to cardiac arrest.
Full Fleet Coverage
The planned fleet-wide deployment is intended to make defibrillators accessible across Madrid’s bus network, rather than confining them to fixed public locations. Buses carrying the equipment will be marked so the public can identify where an AED is available.
The devices are intended to complement emergency medical services. Their presence on buses can make equipment available in more parts of the city, while emergency dispatchers and responders remain basic to coordinating care.
Training for Drivers
EMT Madrid drivers are to receive training to respond to cardiac emergencies. The AEDs are also intended for public use, with audio prompts guiding bystanders while they wait for emergency teams, including SAMUR-Protección Civil.
Rapid access to an AED can support an early response to cardiac arrest. Outcomes depend on recognising the emergency and contacting 112, followed by CPR and use of a defibrillator when appropriate.
