Qantas Airways is rolling out its “Qantas Economy Plus” service on Airbus A330 aircraft serving Japan-Australia routes, with flights carrying the new option scheduled to depart from September 18. The product offers up to 40% more legroom than standard economy, alongside priority boarding and earlier access to overhead-bin space. It adds a paid extra-legroom tier within economy; the standard cabin remains available.
Economy Plus capacity varies across the A330 fleet. The A330-200D has 58 seats, while the A330-200LR has 50. The A330-300 has 56. Qantas is refurbishing its A330s in phases to install the section, with the upgrades expected to be completed by September. The airline already offers the product on aircraft including the Airbus A321XLR and Boeing 737. The Airbus A220 is also among the aircraft with the service, making the A330 rollout an expansion of an existing product. Qantas A330 economy cabins use a 2-4-2 seating layout on at least some aircraft; the number of Economy Plus seats available will so depend on the configuration assigned to each flight.
Published one-way price examples start at JPY 10,610 for Tokyo/Narita to Brisbane. The Tokyo/Narita-Melbourne route starts at JPY 11,170, while Tokyo/Haneda to Sydney starts at JPY 12,845. Passengers can also use Qantas Points, with the Tokyo-Sydney example starting at 22,000 points. These are examples, not fixed fares: the amount or points required can vary with the flight, fare, availability and booking date. Qantas presents the offering as an extra choice for passengers seeking more comfort without booking a higher cabin class.
The initial focus is on services linking Tokyo with Brisbane. Melbourne and Sydney are also among the destinations. For travellers between Spain and Australia, the product could be relevant to itineraries connecting through Japan, although it does not establish a dedicated Spain-Japan-Australia Economy Plus fare or schedule. More broadly, the rollout reflects airlines’ use of selected extra-legroom seats and priority services to differentiate economy cabins. Its effect on passenger demand and competition will depend on uptake and route availability.
