Toledo’s Diputación has allocated an initial €4,000 to help participating schools pay for public transport to one of 33 nature trails. The programme is open to pupils in the fifth and sixth years of primary school.

Environmental monitors lead pupils along the trails, introducing them to local ecosystems and their plant and animal life. The Diputación de Toledo has set aside an initial €4,000 to help participating schools cover part of their journey to a chosen route, provided they use public transport. The allocation is intended to support schools with transport costs.

The scheme, run by the Diputación’s Servicio de Agricultura, Medio Ambiente y Mundo Rural, offers pupils in the fifth and sixth years of primary school a choice of 33 routes in the province’s Red de Senderos Homologados. The provincial authority says the programme is returning after previous editions drew a strong response from schools. La Tribuna de Toledo reported that the initiative pairs environmental education with physical activity and lessons about the province’s natural areas.

Marina García, the provincial deputy for Environment, Agriculture and Livestock, said the initiative gives children direct experience of the province’s natural wealth and encourages them to respect and protect it. She said the transport contribution is intended to make participation easier for schools.

The routes span 21 named municipalities and localities, including Madridejos, Navalcán, Los Yébenes, Cabañas de Yepes, La Guardia, El Real de San Vicente, Noez, Montesclaros, Valdeverdeja, La Puebla de Almoradiel, La Rinconada, Méntrida, Villarrubia de Santiago, Robledo del Mazo, Guadamur, Polán, Villaminaya, San Pablo de los Montes, Los Navalmorales, Dosbarrios and Villafranca de los Caballeros. Toledo province has also featured in separate coverage of a train collision.

During the walks, pupils learn about the natural environment and practise using field equipment, including compasses and binoculars. They also use identification guides. The sessions include physical activity and local cultural content, with environmental monitors leading the activities.

Activities are scheduled on school Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 13:00. The calendar runs from 6 October to 3 December 2026 and from 2 February to 29 April 2027, with the content and duration adapted to each group. El Digital Castilla-La Mancha reported that reservations for the season can be made through a form on the Diputación de Toledo website.
