King of Spain to Attend National Team Match in Mexico at President’s Invitation. Felipe VI has confirmed his attendance at the Spain vs. Uruguay match at the World Cup in Mexico. The invitation was extended by Claudia Sheinbaum. The visit marks a new phase in relations between the two countries.

Felipe VI has officially accepted the invitation from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and will attend the World Cup match between Spain and Uruguay in Guadalajara on June 26. This decision has been confirmed by the Spanish royal family and has already been communicated to both Sheinbaum herself and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. For the Spanish team, this match will be the final one in the group stage of the tournament.

The invitation from Claudia Sheinbaum was sent back on February 3, but it became known only a month later. At that time, the Spanish royal residence emphasized that the offer had been gratefully accepted and had arrived before Felipe VI publicly commented on the events of the Conquest era. Later, Sheinbaum clarified that the invitation was addressed not only to the Spanish monarch but also to other world leaders, and was not related to his statements about "abuses" during the conquest of the Americas.

In recent years, relations between Spain and Mexico have gone through a difficult period. The reason was a request by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador for a public apology for the actions of the Spanish crown in the 16th century—something Felipe VI did not respond to personally. Sheinbaum did not invite the king to her inauguration, considering this a sign of respect for Mexican society and her predecessor. However, in 2026 the situation changed: first, Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares acknowledged the need to analyze historical events, and then Felipe VI also recognized that abuses had taken place in the past.

Amid these changes, Sheinbaum decided to personally visit Barcelona to participate in a summit of leaders dedicated to supporting democracy, and shortly thereafter Albares traveled to Mexico. Now the king is also joining diplomatic contacts, which may indicate a gradual restoration of dialogue between the countries. It is important to note that such visits to major sporting events often become an occasion to discuss both sports and political issues. Similar examples can be found in other areas: for example, Catalan authorities recently proposed to California to create a joint media hub for the entertainment industry, which was covered in detail in the article about negotiations between Catalonia and Los Angeles.

For reference: the 2026 FIFA World Cup is being held in three countries — Mexico, the USA, and Canada. Guadalajara is one of the key cities of the tournament, and the Spain–Uruguay match is drawing attention not only from the sports community but also from political circles. King Felipe VI's visit could symbolize a new stage in relations between Spain and Mexico, as well as highlight the importance of sports events for diplomacy. According to RUSSPAIN, such high-level meetings are often used to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss current issues outside of formal negotiations.
