Police seize 5,000 MDMA tablets hidden in toy bound for overseas delivery

Drug Smuggling Attempt Hidden Inside Toy Parts Revealed in Madrid

Two men have been detained in Madrid after attempting to ship a large quantity of MDMA and ketamine abroad, concealing the drugs inside parts of a toy tower. The seized narcotics are valued at over €80,000.

In Madrid, police thwarted an unusual smuggling attempt: two men tried to send abroad more than 5,000 MDMA tablets and nearly 800 grams of powdered mixture, disguising them as parts of a toy tower. According to law enforcement, the seized drugs could have been worth over €80,000.

Suspicious package

The incident began on August 22, when delivery service employees noticed a large box the client insisted should not be opened, citing the presence of ‘collectible parts.’ The absence of documentation and the sender’s nervous behavior raised suspicions, prompting police inspection. Inside the box were three packages with 12 transparent bags, in which orange tablets and four bags of pink powder were hidden among the construction set parts.

Investigation and arrests

Police determined that two men were behind the shipment. One of them bought the toy at a Madrid shopping center, deliberately choosing a set with the maximum number of pieces to better disguise the drugs. The other delivered the package to the courier service but made several mistakes: he did not provide a receipt, used fake sender information, and paid in cash. His behavior and attempt to avoid inspection only heightened the staff’s suspicions.

The organizer of the scheme

The investigation revealed that the scheme was orchestrated by a third individual who was already in prison for another case involving large-scale drug trafficking. He was the one who instructed the two detainees to prepare and send the package. On March 18, police searched the suspects’ addresses and arrested them on charges of crimes against public health. The court immediately remanded both into custody.

Context and trends

This case is yet another example of how criminal groups use creative methods to conceal prohibited substances during international shipments. The vigilance of delivery service employees and coordinated police work prevented a large shipment of drugs from reaching the foreign market. Such schemes are being uncovered more frequently, as confirmed by a recent crackdown on illegal activity in Castellón, where the alertness of workers and the swift action of law enforcement also played a key role.
