BMW M4 Competition Cabrio and Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabrio: A Top-Down Duel Without Compromises

Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabrio vs BMW M4 Cabrio: Comparison for the Spanish Market

Two powerful convertibles—the BMW M4 Competition Cabrio xDrive and the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Cabrio—arrive on the Spanish market. We compare their performance, interiors, and technical details. Focused on real-world experience and key insights for buyers in Spain.

A new battle is unfolding in Spain’s premium convertible segment: the BMW M4 Competition Cabrio xDrive and the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4Matic+ Cabrio are entering the market, each offering a different take on the pleasure of open-top driving. Both cars target those who value not only performance but also status, and are willing to pay for maximum behind-the-wheel excitement. Given Spain’s climate, where convertible season lasts longer, these models carve out a niche among enthusiasts and collectors.

Architecture and Design

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabrio is a fresh contender, combining traits from two previous models: the C-Class and E-Class cabriolets. The CLE is 5 centimeters longer than the BMW, affecting both its proportions and road presence. However, technically, the CLE is closer to the C-Class, retaining the brand’s signature handling and balance. The BMW M4 Cabrio, on the other hand, stands out with its aggressive styling and massive grille, immediately conveying its sporty nature and its M lineage.

Both convertibles feature a soft folding roof that can be opened remotely. The BMW completes this process in 20 seconds, while the Mercedes takes 22—an almost negligible difference. At high speeds, the M4 exhibits slightly less aerodynamic noise, which is important for comfort on the highway.

Interior and Practicality

Inside, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabrio focuses on visual impact: two large displays, glossy surfaces, and chrome accents create an atmosphere of luxury and high technology. This approach may seem excessive, but for many buyers, it is precisely what defines the premium segment. The BMW M4 interior is more restrained, emphasizing simplicity and ergonomics. Even without the optional carbon-fiber bucket seats, the standard sports seats provide excellent support, while in the CLE, similar seats balance comfort with reliable fixation.

The second row in both convertibles is not designed for long trips with adults—space is limited, especially in width in the BMW, though there is slightly better legroom. The trunk volume for the M4 ranges from 300 to 385 liters, and for the CLE from 285 to 375, but the Mercedes has a wider opening and easier access to luggage. For convertibles of this class, these are standard figures, and the choice between them depends more on personal preferences.

Engines and performance

The main intrigue lies in the engines. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabrio is equipped with a 3-liter inline-six producing 449 hp and 600 Nm of torque. Thanks to turbocharging and an additional electric compressor, the engine is smooth and responsive at low revs, while the 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system ensures confident acceleration: 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h.

The BMW M4 Competition Cabrio xDrive goes even further: its three-liter inline six-cylinder engine with twin turbochargers delivers 530 hp and 650 Nm. This power reserve allows the M4 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, and to 200 km/h in 11.8 seconds, bringing it close to the supercars of the recent past. Body stiffness is ensured by additional reinforcements, which is critical for a convertible with this level of output.

Handling and efficiency

The BMW M4 Cabrio features a specific M series front axle, giving it an advantage in steering precision even at high speeds. At the same time, the M4 is 180 kg lighter than the Mercedes, which affects agility and the feeling of lightness. The CLE 53 has a higher percentage of its weight on the front axle, which results in a certain heaviness in cornering dynamics. Both vehicles deliver outstanding braking performance: from 100 km/h, the M4 stops in 33.6 meters, and the CLE in 33.4 meters, which is an excellent result for heavy convertibles.

In terms of fuel consumption, the Mercedes wins thanks to its 23 hp mild hybrid system: average consumption in the test was 11.3 l/100 km compared to 12.5 for the BMW. However, the CLE’s automatic transmission (9-speed) reacts a bit more slowly than the M4’s 8-speed automatic, especially when shifting manually with paddles.

Market context and conclusions

For the Spanish market, both convertibles remain niche but highly noticeable offerings. The BMW M4 Cabrio targets those seeking maximum performance and who are unwilling to compromise on handling, even if that means higher fuel consumption and price due to the optional ceramic brakes. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabrio, on the other hand, bets on versatility: it is slightly less extreme but offers superior comfort, efficiency, and technology, which can be crucial for long journeys on Spanish roads.

Overall, the choice between these models depends on the buyer’s priorities: if the thrill and sporty character are key — the BMW M4 Cabrio appears preferable. If comfort, style, and fuel savings come first, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabrio becomes the more balanced option. Incidentally, interest in hybrid technology in the premium segment is also confirmed by Porsche’s experience, where the innovative suspension and battery of the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid are already reshaping perceptions of sports sedans, as noted in the feature on the unexpected comfort of hybrid models.

Both convertibles are available on the Spanish market and are aimed at a limited but loyal audience. Their arrival underlines that even in the era of electrification, demand for powerful petrol versions with open tops persists, and competition in this segment is only intensifying.
