Adif suspended all high speed trains between Madrid and Barcelona after a lightning strike damaged overhead lines in Catalonia. The closure disrupts Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo services for at least two hours. Authorities cite safety and urgent repairs.

Spain's busiest high speed rail line stopped abruptly on Wednesday when Adif suspended all Madrid–Barcelona AVE trains. The shutdown followed a lightning strike during severe storms in Catalonia, which damaged the overhead wires near Sant Vicenç dels Horts and forced emergency repairs. According to Adif and the Ministry of Transport, the incident happened between Sant Vicenç dels Horts and El Prat de Llobregat, a key stretch of the route.

By late morning, passengers were already facing delays of up to an hour as Renfe, Iryo, and Ouigo trains were diverted onto a single track. The congestion quickly made the timetable unworkable, leading to growing frustration among travelers and operators. At 11:00, Adif decided to halt all traffic, saying a full power cut was needed to safely repair the damaged lines. The company stressed that disconnecting the power entirely was the only way to protect workers, since partial repairs under live wires would have been too dangerous.

Before the full suspension, trains were already running with delays of up to an hour as they were forced to use a single track through the affected area.

The closure is expected to last at least two hours, with hopes of resuming service by 13:00 if weather allows. Adif confirmed on its network status page that crews were working to fix the problem "as quickly as possible." Although the damaged section is relatively short, the disruption affected the entire high speed network between Madrid and Barcelona, impacting both business and leisure travelers. According to Libertad Digital, the Ministry of Transport worked closely with Adif to manage the emergency and keep the public informed.

The disruption came as violent storms swept across Catalonia. The Generalitat responded by restricting movement and suspending all classes, university activities, and outdoor sports in five densely populated areas: Baix Llobregat, Vallès Occidental, Garraf, Alt Penedès, and Baix Penedès. These measures affected about two million people, with authorities urging remote work and caution on the roads. The regional government also sent emergency alerts to mobile phones, advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and not to cross flooded areas, as Catalonia was under the INUNCAT emergency plan for heavy rain.

Barcelona also activated its municipal emergency plan because of the risk of flooding and drainage problems. The city, already hit by storms in recent weeks, has faced repeated weather alerts and pressure on its infrastructure. As reported earlier, recent downpours have brought both relief from heat and new challenges for transport and public services.

In addition to the AVE high speed line, regional Rodalies services in southern Catalonia also experienced disruptions due to the severe weather, highlighting the broader impact of the storm on the region's rail infrastructure.

Spain's high speed rail is essential for both business and leisure travel, so any extended outage on the Madrid–Barcelona line has immediate economic and logistical effects. Adif's decision to stop all trains, rather than attempt partial repairs or limited service, put safety and a quick restoration ahead of short-term convenience. With Catalonia's weather becoming more unpredictable, the reliability of key infrastructure is under renewed scrutiny. This week's events show that even advanced transport networks can be disrupted by sudden storms, and that stopping service entirely is sometimes the only responsible option when safety is at risk.
