Volkswagen Brings Back Jetta: Electric SUV for China Under €13,000 Surprises Market

Jetta X Concept — Volkswagen's new budget electric car for China priced under 100,000 yuan

Volkswagen has unveiled the Jetta X Concept at the Beijing Motor Show—an electric SUV set to become the brand’s most affordable model in China. The starting price is below €13,000. The German automaker is betting on local development and accelerating its model lineup renewal.

Volkswagen made an unexpected move in the electric vehicle market by unveiling the Jetta X Concept at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show — an electric SUV that will be the first model of the revived Jetta brand for China. The main intrigue is the starting price below 13,000 euros, which immediately sets the newcomer apart from competitors and underscores the company’s strategy to conquer the mass segment in China.

Jetta X Concept: Focus on Affordability

The Jetta X Concept is a compact electric crossover designed specifically for the Chinese market, built on the locally developed Compact Main Platform (CMP). Externally, the model is closer to utilitarian, simply designed vehicles than to traditional European Volkswagens, and in spirit resembles budget solutions like Dacia. Production will begin this year at FAW facilities, and according to the auto show, the price will not exceed 100,000 yuan (about 12,500 euros at the current rate).

The revival of the Jetta name is more than just a marketing move. After Skoda’s withdrawal from the Chinese market due to declining sales, Jetta is now becoming Volkswagen’s flagship budget brand in China. By 2028, the model line will be expanded with four more models, four of which will be electrified. This approach enables the company to quickly respond to local consumer demands and offer highly customized solutions.

Localization and new alliances

The 2026 Beijing Auto Show became a platform for Volkswagen to unveil several new models developed in partnership with Chinese companies. Among them are the mid-size electric SUV Volkswagen ID. Aura T6, created jointly with FAW, and the newly launched electric sedan Volkswagen ID. Unyx 09, which incorporates Xpeng technologies. Both vehicles are built on the new CEA architecture, developed in collaboration with Xpeng, allowing for the integration of Level 2+ driver assistance systems and advanced multimedia suites featuring elements of artificial intelligence.

The production version of the fully electric AUDI E7X, produced as part of the joint venture with SAIC, was also showcased in Beijing. This model expands Audi’s presence in China and complements the range of electric crossovers already on the market.

Why this matters for Spain

Although the Jetta X Concept and other Volkswagen premieres are currently announced exclusively for China, their debut reflects global trends in the group’s strategy. Focusing on local development, faster model launch cycles, and targeting the mass market may influence Volkswagen’s approach in Europe, including Spain. As competition in the electric vehicle market intensifies and buyers become more price-sensitive, the experience of the Chinese division could serve as a reference for future budget models in the EU.

In Spain, the Jetta brand is not officially represented, and the affordable electric crossover segment is only starting to take shape. However, interest in such solutions is evident: with rising new car prices and stricter environmental regulations, the arrival of electric SUVs priced below 15,000 euros could significantly change the demand structure. As experience with other brands shows, for example, after the Audi A1 was discontinued at the Spanish plant—a topic thoroughly examined in the analysis of the consequences for local production, the market quickly responds to changes in the model policy of major corporations.

Fact sheet: Volkswagen’s electric vehicle strategy

According to the auto show, Volkswagen plans to launch 20 new electric vehicles in China this year alone, and by 2030, increase the number of electrified models to 50, around 30 of which will be fully electric. All new models will receive modern electric architectures, advanced assistants, and intelligent functions tailored to Chinese customers’ needs. This large-scale approach highlights how seriously the group views the Asian market and how quickly the brand’s global strategy is evolving.
