On the evening of April 24, in Beas de Segura (Andalusia), a man was tragically killed after sustaining fatal injuries from a bull during the traditional San Marcos festival. The incident occurred around 19:40 at one of the barricades during another stage of releasing the animals. According to emergency service 112, the man was near the fence when the bull attacked him, resulting in his immediate death.
Local authorities and festival organizers — Ayuntamiento beatense and Hermandad de San Marcos — issued a joint statement, expressing their deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones. The statement notes that all participants and festive groups should maintain an atmosphere that reflects the gravity of the incident. Despite the tragedy, the administration emphasized that, according to the festival’s regulations, the events scheduled for Saturday will not be canceled.
The following day, three bull releases are scheduled in Beas de Segura: the first will begin at 7:30 a.m., when the animals are traditionally decorated, and two more will take place at 13:30 and 17:00. As a sign of respect for the deceased, a minute of silence accompanied by the sound of a trumpet will be observed before the start of each event, as required by local festival procedure.
Tragedies at such events in the region are not uncommon. Fatal incidents have previously occurred during the San Marcos fiesta in Beas de Segura. For example, last year the owner of the Toros de San Román ranch died, a case that was discussed in detail in a report about the impact on the local community — details of the incident and residents’ reactions.
