In Spain, the prosecutor’s office has requested a nine-year prison sentence for former RCD Espanyol footballer Álvaro Aguado. According to the investigation, he is accused of sexual assault against a club employee, which allegedly took place in the men’s restroom of the Opium nightclub in Barcelona in June 2024. In addition to imprisonment, the prosecution is demanding Aguado pay compensation of 65,000 euros for moral damages and the psychological impact on the victim.
According to case materials reviewed by the EFE agency, the incident occurred on the night of June 24 during Espanyol’s celebration of their promotion to the top division. Prosecutors say the woman was in a state of shock and repeatedly asked for the acts to stop, stating she did not wish to engage in intimate relations. In her testimony, she noted that she does not remember all the details, but she retains specific memories of that night.
Statements from both sides
The victim admitted to having consumed alcohol and smoked hookah, although she had not done so before. She also told acquaintances that she did not like Aguado and did not want to dance with him. Aguado himself claims that the intimacy occurred by mutual consent and that the initiative came from the woman. He says she entered the restroom first, closed the door, then opened it and asked, “¿no te atreves?”
Consequences for the club
In June 2025, Espanyol’s management officially announced that Álvaro Aguado’s contract would not be renewed. This decision was made against the backdrop of an ongoing investigation and legal proceedings in a sexual assault case.
Case context
The case has attracted attention from the Spanish media due to the status of the individual involved and the circumstances of the incident. As EFE notes, the investigation is ongoing, and the final decision will be made by the court. The issue of compensation and potential punishment remains open until the judicial process is complete.
