Spanish Foreign Ministry Summons Israeli Representative Over Detention of Ships with Spanish Citizens Off Greek Coast

The detention of 21 humanitarian aid vessels sparks urgent response from Madrid

Spain has protested to Israel after the detention of a fleet carrying 31 Spanish citizens. The vessels were stopped in international waters off Greece. The authorities are maintaining contact with the participants and diplomats.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs urgently summoned a representative of the Israeli embassy to Madrid after Israeli forces detained 21 vessels carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza. On board were 175 activists, including 31 Spanish citizens. The incident occurred in international waters south of Greece, approximately a thousand kilometers from the Gaza Strip coastline.

According to diplomatic sources, Spanish authorities lodged a strong protest over Israel’s actions. The Foreign Ministry emphasized that the detention occurred outside territorial waters and affected citizens of several countries. In response, the Spanish embassy and consulate in Israel, as well as consular services in the region and an emergency consular team, are operating in enhanced mode. They are in constant contact with the mission organizers and are monitoring the situation of the Spaniards on board.

Diplomatic Steps

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares is in contact with his counterparts from other countries whose citizens were also detained. The authorities are coordinating efforts to protect the interests of their citizens and obtain information about the mission participants’ further fate. According to sources, the situation remains tense, and Spanish official bodies continue to seek clarification from the Israeli side.

Context and Consequences

The detention of ships carrying humanitarian aid has raised concerns not only in Spain, but also in other European countries. Questions regarding the actions of authorities and emergency services in such situations have arisen before, for example, during discussions about the response to transport incidents in the region. In particular, attention to coordination between countries and agencies intensified after the publication of material about how the authorities in Valencia failed to warn a transport company about an impending disaster.

At the time of publication, Spanish diplomats are continuing efforts to repatriate citizens and clarify all circumstances surrounding the detention. Further steps are expected to depend on the response of Israeli authorities and developments regarding the humanitarian mission.
