Who Missed Vargas Llosa’s Memorial Evening in Madrid and Why

Vargas Llosa tribute in Madrid who made headlines and who stole the show

A year after Mario Vargas Llosa’s passing, his son hosted an intimate memorial in Madrid attended by prominent cultural figures. Several of the writer’s close friends were notably absent, and his former partner as well as her family stayed away from the event

A year after the death of Mario Vargas Llosa, a memorial evening was held in Madrid, organized by his son Álvaro. The event provided not only an opportunity for family and friends to remember the writer, but also a platform for the cultural elite to discuss his legacy. The gathering maintained an intimate atmosphere: participants read excerpts from autobiographical texts, and Álvaro Vargas Llosa spoke personally with each guest to add context and highlight different facets of his father’s character.

Among the guests were actor José Sacristán, journalist Mercedes Monmany, and bullfighter Andrés Roca Rey. Each offered their own contributions to a collective portrait of the writer, and the evening was marked by a special warmth and respect for the memory of the Nobel laureate. Organizers emphasized that the event was not intended for the general public, but was meant to bring together those for whom Vargas Llosa was not only an outstanding author, but also a close friend.

Familiar names and notable absences

However, not everyone connected to the writer attended the evening. Some of those who participated in the VI Biennial Mario Vargas Llosa in Spain last autumn were absent this time. Notably, actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, who had maintained a long friendship with the writer and performed with him in the play “Odiseo y Penélope” in Mérida in 2006, was missing. Her absence raised questions among fans, as she was the witness to the beginning of the romance between Vargas Llosa and Isabel Preysler.

The romance between Vargas Llosa and Preysler lasted eight years and ended in late 2022. After the breakup, they went their separate ways, and neither Preysler nor anyone from her circle attended the memorial evening. According to RUSSPAIN, news of the writer’s death caught Preysler by surprise, even though their relationship had ended long ago. Shortly afterward, she released an autobiography publishing personal letters from Vargas Llosa, which brought renewed attention to their story.

Family decisions and Álvaro’s role

The organization of the memorial evening fell entirely on the shoulders of Álvaro Vargas Llosa, the writer’s eldest son. His brother and sister, Gonzalo and Morgana, supported the initiative, but it was Álvaro who became the main custodian of his father’s literary legacy. He not only manages the copyright, but also actively shares memories of the writer’s last days, highlighting details that had previously remained unknown to the public. Álvaro has also inherited the title Marqués de Vargas Llosa, which was granted to his father by King Juan Carlos I in 2011.

The memorial evening became not only a family event, but also a forum for discussing Vargas Llosa’s contribution to world literature. Participants noted that his works continue to influence new generations of readers and writers. At the same time, the absence of some close friends and former companions added a sense of understatement to the event, heightening interest in the details of his personal story.

Personal and public

Interest in Vargas Llosa’s private life has not waned even after his death. The publication of letters in Preysler’s book sparked heated debate, and details of their relationship still fascinate fans. In this context, it is worth recalling that Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, who was close to the writer, recently found herself in the spotlight because of her own relationship — her romance with actor Maxi Iglesias became one of the most talked-about topics of the spring. Such intersections of personal and public stories only highlight how closely the destinies of prominent figures are intertwined within Spain’s cultural life.

Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the most influential writers in the Spanish-speaking world, with works translated into dozens of languages. His literary career has been marked not only by the Nobel Prize but also by numerous other awards. In addition to his writing, he was actively involved in public and political life, making him a figure of global stature. His legacy continues to be discussed years after his passing, with his memory preserved both within his family and the professional community.
