EU biometric system rollout sparks chaos and long queues at European airports

Unexpected disruptions at EU borders hinder travel plans

The rollout of a new EU border control system has led to widespread delays. Spanish travelers faced hours-long lines. The changes are already disrupting travel plans and airport operations across the continent.

The introduction of an electronic biometric control system at European Union borders has caused major delays at airports, which Spanish passengers have already felt. The new rules, implemented in April, affect not only major international hubs but also regional airports across Europe. For Spain, this means not only longer waiting times at the border but also risks for the tourism sector, which traditionally relies on an uninterrupted flow of travelers.

According to the Financial Times, disruptions have been reported in France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, and Greece. The Entry/Exit System (EES), launched on April 10, requires citizens of non-EU countries, including the United Kingdom, to register personal and biometric data on their first entry. The process was expected to take no more than a minute and a half, but in practice, many passengers are forced to wait in line for several hours, and some miss their flights as a result.

Border challenges

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the EES covers the entire Schengen area, except for Ireland and Cyprus, and also extends to Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland. Passport stamps are no longer issued, which was supposed to speed up the process, but in reality has had the opposite effect. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, delays are particularly noticeable during peak periods when the number of arrivals sharply increases.

Olivier Jankovec, CEO of the European division of the Airports Council International, notes that the situation may spiral out of control during the summer months, when passenger traffic traditionally peaks. Key reasons cited include closed terminals, staff shortages, and computer system failures. Some airports in Spain are already seeing cases where passengers are forced to change tickets or cancel trips because they cannot complete security checks in time.

Impact on Spain

For Spain, where tourism remains one of the key sectors of the economy, such disruptions could reduce the country’s appeal for foreign visitors. Airports in Madrid and Barcelona, as well as popular holiday destinations, are already experiencing a rise in complaints from travelers. According to RUSSPAIN, border delays are causing growing frustration among tourists and local workers in the service industry.

Authorities are discussing the possibility of temporarily suspending EES registration if lines become excessive, though no decision has been made yet. Experts stress that without prompt action, the situation could worsen, especially at the height of the summer season. Drawing on the experience of other countries, similar technological innovations often face initial challenges but can improve security and streamline control in the long run.

European context

Problems with implementing new control systems are not unique to Spain. Other EU countries are also experiencing widespread delays and disruptions, as confirmed by an analysis by russpain.com. For example, in Madrid, queues have previously formed due to changes in migration procedures, as described in a report on the difficulties of migrant legalization — hundreds of people waited for documents needed for legalization. This highlights that any reforms in the field of control and migration require thorough preparation and adaptation of infrastructure.

In recent years, European airports have repeatedly faced difficulties introducing new technologies. For example, the launch of automated border control systems in Germany and France was accompanied by technical failures and staff shortages. In Spain, similar problems arose during the transition to electronic visas and the implementation of new security standards. Despite these challenges, such changes are inevitable as traveler numbers grow and security requirements become stricter.
