Chinese hybrids are edging out Europeans These models have a feature that worries rivals

Two Chinese hybrids are disrupting the market—the catch everyone missed

Chinese hybrids are stepping on the heels of European cars—and not just because of price. The new BYD Seal U DM-i and Omoda 7 SHS have a hidden feature that could change the market: the usual choices no longer apply. Who stands to lose out—details inside.

The market for plug-in hybrid crossovers is changing rapidly: Chinese brands are not just catching up, but already setting the pace. Buyers in Spain are increasingly choosing these vehicles because they offer savings, eco-friendliness, and cutting-edge technology. In 2026, BYD Seal U DM-i and Omoda 7 SHS became symbols of a new era, with traditional European brands losing ground. These two models not only deliver impressive specs, but also set new standards in the PHEV segment.

Demand for zero-emission hybrids is rising, and Chinese manufacturers are capitalizing on this trend to the fullest. BYD Seal U DM-i has already secured its place among the top sellers, while Omoda 7 SHS is just entering the market but immediately makes an impact with a powerful engine and an unconventional approach to features. For many buyers, choosing between these two models is a real dilemma: the price difference is minimal, while the differences in detail could be decisive.

Dimensions and space

The BYD Seal U DM-i stands out for its size: 4.75 meters in length, 1.89 meters in width, 1.67 meters in height, and a wheelbase of 2.76 meters. This provides a spacious interior, especially for second-row passengers. There’s plenty of legroom and shoulder room, and the quality of the finishing is notably above average for the segment. However, the trunk is not particularly large—ranging from 425 to 450 liters depending on the version, although with the seats folded, capacity rises to 1,460 liters. Still, in this aspect, the Seal U DM-i leads the Omoda 7 SHS.

The Omoda 7 SHS is slightly more compact: 4.66 meters long, 1.88 meters wide, 1.67 meters high, with a wheelbase of 2.72 meters. The cabin feels spacious, especially in the rear seats, though the trunk is smaller than the competitor’s—401 liters (or 537 liters measured to the ceiling). Material quality is pleasantly surprising: soft leatherette, neat assembly, no squeaks. However, BYD still leads in trim quality and ergonomics.

Technology and features

The BYD Seal U DM-i features a digital interior with two screens: a central display of 12.8 or 15.6 inches that can rotate, supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and voice control. The instrument cluster is on a separate 12.3-inch customizable screen. In the Boost, Comfort, and Design trims, you get 19-inch wheels, a panoramic roof, power tailgate, LED headlights, 360-degree cameras, and heated and ventilated front seats. The top version adds a head-up display and a 10-speaker audio system.

The Omoda 7 SHS keeps up: a 15.6-inch central screen (in Premium trim, it slides toward the passenger), wireless service support, and a separate digital instrument cluster. The Pure base version includes 19-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, and a rearview camera. The Premium trim adds 20-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera, head-up display, leather interior, seat heating and ventilation, power tailgate, and a panoramic roof. Such a list of features is rare in this price segment.

Engines and range

The BYD Seal U DM-i comes in three versions: two front-wheel drive models (218 hp) and one all-wheel drive model (324 hp). The options differ in battery capacity: 18.3 kWh (80 km electric range) and 26.6 kWh (up to 125 km on electric power alone). The all-wheel drive version features two electric motors and a turbocharged gasoline engine, delivering 324 hp and 70 km of electric-only range. All models use LFP batteries, support AC charging up to 11 kW and DC charging up to 18 kW, and offer V2L capability for powering external devices.

The Omoda 7 SHS is equipped with a Super Hybrid System (SHS) featuring a 1.5-liter turbo engine and an electric motor, producing a combined 279 hp. The 18.3 kWh battery provides up to 92 km on electric power. It uses BYD’s proprietary Blade Battery, supports DC charging up to 40 kW and AC charging up to 6.6 kW, and also offers V2L functionality. In terms of power, the Omoda 7 SHS surpasses the base BYD models, while its electric driving range sits between its two main rivals.

Price and Value

The BYD Seal U DM-i starts at €38,500, but with discounts and government incentives, the price can drop to €31,990. The Comfort version with the maximum range starts at €33,990. The Omoda 7 SHS is offered from €32,990 with promotions included. The difference between the models is minimal, but for frequent electric driving, the Seal U DM-i with the larger battery is the more economical choice. However, the Omoda 7 SHS stands out for its power and fast charging—important factors for those who often travel long distances.

Interestingly, Chinese brands are not only competing among themselves but are also pushing European marques out of their familiar positions. russpain.com analysis points out that a similar situation already occurred with Lynk & Co 02, which sparked a surge in the electric crossover market — more on how Lynk & Co 02 changed the game.

BYD, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electric and hybrid vehicles, is rapidly expanding its presence in the European market. The company is known for its proprietary battery technologies and wide range of models. Omoda, a brand within the Chery group, focuses on innovation and distinctive design, offering well-equipped cars at competitive prices. Both brands aim for leadership in the hybrid crossover segment, already shaping buyer preferences in Spain and across Europe.
