A cold front moving in from the north is bringing a sharp shift in Spain’s weather this Thursday, ending a recent period of atmospheric stability. It is triggering instability across the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with heavy cloud cover and locally intense showers expected, especially in the northern third of the country. AEMET forecasts showers and locally strong thunderstorms in the Sistema Ibérico, the Pyrenees and the upper Ebro, as a colder air mass increases instability inland and in the northeast. In eastern regions and the Balearic archipelago, storms may bring hail, raising concerns for residents and local authorities.
Elsewhere, variable cloudiness will persist. While most areas are expected to avoid the heaviest rainfall, occasional showers cannot be ruled out. Winds are forecast to be moderate, but very strong gusts are possible in the southeast, Ebro Valley, Balearic Islands and Alboran Sea, potentially disrupting daily activities and transport. AEMET’s official warning service provides alerts for weather hazards including rain, thunderstorms and wind. A report dated 20 August described warnings across 10 autonomous communities, seven of them at orange level.
Temperatures are set to drop significantly across much of the peninsula, with the sharpest decrease in interior regions. The change will not bring a uniform nationwide cooldown, but: AEMET’s forecast for 20 August put daytime highs at 36 to 38°C across much of Spain and 38 to 40°C in the Ebro, Tajo, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys, as well as parts of Valencia, Murcia, Huesca and Lleida. Forecast highs were around 38°C in Madrid’s metropolitan area and 39°C in Aranjuez, with 40 to 41°C in western parts of the basic depression. The figures show that extreme heat was expected to persist even as storms and cooler conditions affected other regions.
The Mediterranean coast and Balearic Islands will buck the daytime cooling trend in some areas. Minimum temperatures were forecast to fall in western Andalusia but rise in the Balearic Islands. Nighttime temperatures were expected to remain above 20°C along the Mediterranean coast and in the southwest, and above 25°C in the Ebro, Tajo and Guadalquivir valleys. In Catalonia, afternoon cloud development over the Pyrenees could bring showers and thunderstorms; Madrid was expected to remain mostly clear, with isolated dry thunderstorms possible in the mountains.
In the Canary Islands, conditions will remain more stable. The northern slopes will see overcast skies, while the south enjoys clearer conditions. Temperatures are expected to remain steady, with moderate trade winds continuing to offer a respite from the more turbulent weather on the mainland.
The temperature change coincides with the wildfire emergency in Las Hurdes, Cáceres. Images documented the fire there on 19 August, while separate reporting identified northern Cáceres as an area of extreme wildfire risk. The blaze has already forced around 700 residents from eleven communities to evacuate and burned at least 2,200 hectares of pine forest. Authorities describe the fire as “convective,” with such intensity that it generated its own wind and temperature, making direct intervention impossible during the initial hours. Firefighters have faced a self-sustaining column of hot air that fueled the blaze’s advance.

Storms, hail and strong winds increase the risk of localized flooding and property damage, particularly in areas unaccustomed to such abrupt shifts.
