Spanish Tax Agency Updates Tax Return Deadlines Key Points for 2025

2025 Tax Declaration Deadlines in Spain Key Dates and New Requirements

Tax return deadlines in 2025 have changed. Online filing opens from April 8, and in-person consultations begin in June. Prepare your documents in advance to avoid mistakes and penalties.

In 2025, Spanish taxpayers will face an updated income tax return schedule. Missing deadlines or being unprepared with documents can lead to extra expenses and unpleasant surprises. As of April 8, online filing has already begun, while those preferring expert assistance have separate dates for booking phone or in-person appointments. As Talent24h notes, preparing documents in advance and choosing the right submission channel is key to a smooth tax campaign.

This year, electronic filing once again opened first. To access the Renta Web system or the Agencia Tributaria mobile app, you’ll need an electronic certificate, DNI electrónico, Cl@ve system, or a unique number. This approach helps avoid queues and speeds up the process, but requires care—errors in the application can result in additional charges and penalties.

Schedule and channels

Phone support will begin on May 6, but you can book a consultation from April 29. In-person appointments at offices will be available starting June 1, with bookings opening on May 29. All types of consultations are offered until June 29, and the final deadline for submitting returns is June 30. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, it’s best not to wait until the last weeks to book—slots may run out, and correcting mistakes at the last minute could be difficult.

There are four ways to schedule a phone consultation: via the tax agency’s website using your NIF or NIE and one identification method, through the mobile app, by calling the automated numbers 91 535 73 26 or 901 12 12 24, and by dialing the personal service lines 91 553 00 71 or 901 22 33 44 (weekdays from 9:00 to 19:00). After you select the time, the system will send confirmation by SMS or email, and two days before the consultation, you’ll receive a reminder. Important: official calls will only come from the number 810 520 052.

Documents and key points

Before the consultation, prepare the confirmation number, documents for all declaration participants, bank details, and property information. If you had real estate transactions, rentals, investments, or are eligible for deductions during the year, you’ll need supporting documents. Starting in 2026, the tax agency will receive monthly data on card transfers and Bizum transactions, and the previous €3,000 reporting threshold has been removed. This means it will be harder to hide income, and inspections will become stricter.

Special attention should be paid by those who in 2025 had several employers or multiple sources of income. Mistakes are most common in such cases and can lead to tax recalculations. According to Talent24h, many taxpayers lose money due to inattention or lack of awareness about new rules. Experts therefore recommend getting prepared and seeking help in advance.

Consequences and risks

If you miss the deadline or make mistakes in your declaration, the tax office may impose fines and penalties. This risk is particularly high for those who submit documents in the final days of the campaign, as there is little time left for corrections. Moreover, with each passing year, process automation increases, and the system is more likely to detect discrepancies automatically. This reduces the chances of ‘forgiving’ errors and increases the likelihood of additional charges.

In recent years, Spain has tightened its oversight of tax compliance. In 2024, for example, thousands of citizens received notifications about discrepancies in rental income reports and electronic transfers. Many were forced to urgently prove their case to avoid fines. In 2026, this situation may repeat itself, with even stricter requirements for transparency and completeness of information.

Agencia Tributaria is the main authority responsible for tax collection and oversight in Spain. Each year, it updates regulations and expands digitalization to minimize tax evasion. In recent years, special attention has been given to electronic payments and rental properties. A similar campaign to tighten controls took place in 2024, when thousands of Spaniards faced additional audits and reassessments. Many were unable to prepare their documents on time, leading to widespread complaints and long lines at tax office branches.
