Gabriel Rufián is a figure who never disappears from the radar of the Spanish society columns. This time, the reason for the discussions was not his latest sharp statement in Congress, but personal financial details that became public thanks to the transparency law. As Divinity notes, Rufián’s 2022 declaration revealed unexpected aspects of his finances and family life, raising a wave of new questions and rumors.
A declaration that surprised
Rufián, born in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and open about his Andalusian roots, has long been accustomed to public attention. But this time, it was his financial transparency that drew discussion. According to official data, the politician declared €22,000 in his bank accounts, but what attracted more interest were his debts: a €200,000 mortgage—with €171,000 remaining to be paid by 2023—and another bank loan of €80,000, of which €71,000 was still owed. All this information became accessible thanks to the mandatory declaration for parliamentarians, which Rufián filled in upon taking office.
Family changes and personal life
While his political career unfolds in front of the entire country, Rufián strives to keep his personal life private. However, not everything can be kept secret: his divorce from Mireia Varala in 2018 was discussed just as much as his new relationship with journalist Marta Pagola, whom he officially married in 2022. The family already has two children: his eldest son from his first marriage, and a younger child born in 2024. By the way, Rufián is not the only one whose family story piques public curiosity. There was similar interest recently in the career choice of Luis Bárcenas’s son, as covered in the article about Ignacio Bárcenas’s unexpected decision.
A salary that raises questions
Another detail that has not left either Rufian’s fans or critics indifferent is his income. According to Divinity, in 2023 his annual gross income amounted to 139,710.06 euros, making him one of the highest-paid deputies. This sum includes not only the base salary (€3,366.99 per month), but also an allowance for his position as parliamentary speaker (€4,449.45), as well as compensation for working outside the capital (€2,162.85). All payments are subject to taxes and social contributions, but it is the total amount that has sparked discussion on social media and in the press.
Path to politics and work off-camera
Before becoming one of the most recognizable deputies, Rufian worked for Organización Activa, a company engaged in outsourcing in various countries. His education—a degree in labor relations and a master’s in human resources management—served him well both in this field and later in politics. In his youth, he was not above taking side jobs: from working in nightclubs to unloading trucks and babysitting. Many of these roles, as he himself admitted, were paid in cash.
Despite his public profile, Rufian still tries not to make his private life a matter of public record. But it is precisely the combination of financial openness and attempts to maintain privacy that makes him one of the most talked-about figures in Spanish politics and society. His declaration is not just a formality, but another reason for debate about the boundaries between publicity and private life in modern Spain.
